Many people implementing 70:20:10 like the idea of creating a one page strategy roadmap, that breaks their Vision down into key themes and activities. This post and the FBI example are a useful reference for designing a strategy on a page.


Slide 5 of this link shows a learning strategy roadmap example from DNV talking about their learning strategy. It summarises their 70:20:10 strategy over a three year period and includes the key actions they are taking across three focus areas:


a. to develop the culture,

b. to apply 70:20:10,

c. to develop supporting tools and technology.

TNA creates training outcomes. Performance Analysis on the other hand explores the root causes of performance problems/opportunities to create holistic solutions (i.e. respond to knowledge, skill, motivational and environmental factors). Research shows that training solutions (in isolation) only respond to around 20% of performance problems, so a holistic approach is essential if we are to genuinely impact performance.

A truly valuable article exploring the history of talent management and showing how the traditional approach is no longer valid against today's approach to work. 


A few years ago, I came to a shocking (but hugely beneficial)  realisation when Charles Jennings said words to the effect of, 'Traditional HR and Talent Management Processes pale into insignificance compared to the impact of line leaders developing others'. It made me realise that the 'busy' talent work I had done in the past (and made me feel very important) was largely a waste of time. It reminded me that busy doesn't necessarily mean successful.


I realised I could achieve far greater impact (across a range of talent, development, engagement and performance areas) by focusing my efforts on enabling line to leaders to better develop and support their teams.
