This note by the Vernian Arthur B. Evans seeks to examine the available English translations of one single novel — Cinq semaines en ballon (1863) aka Five Weeks in a Balloon — and to decide which one is the best, judged according to criteria that are both quantitative and qualitative in nature. A Publishing especially appropriate since the year 2013 marks the one hundred-fiftieth anniversary of the original publication of that Verne’s novel in France. See more in Verniana # 6.

Author of 17 poetry collections and an Emmy nominee for spoken-voice recordings, Nikki Giovanni (70) is an American writer, commentator, activist, and educator. She is currently a distinguished professor of English at Virginia Tech. "Here at Virginia Tech, we're proud of our engineering and technical things, and people ask me, 'What good is poetry?'" she said in a phone interview. "I tell them there'd be no science, no mathematics, without poets. Go back to the ancient Greeks. It was the poets who first asked, 'What if ?' There'd be no moon flights if Jules Verne hadn't written a novel about one a century earlier. Poetry is what makes us human."

Like the Terror, Robur's new invention in Jules Verne's novel Master of the World, Aeromobil is a car which can sprout wings and take to the skies (play the video). Perfected for more than 20 years by the slovakian designer Stefan Klein, 53, that flying car - but it is not submarine - will probably be available for customers to buy next year. Just two hundred years later the Terror ! "Anything Jules Verne can imagine, other men can make real" (Passepartout).

The celebration of the tricentennial of the birth of french astronomer La Caille (1713–1762), who was the first geodesist to measure an arc of meridian in South Africa, is an opportunity for the french vernian Jacques Crovisier to come back to The Adventures of three Englishmen and three Russians in South Africa and to try to answer some questions: Were there real persons behind the characters? Who was the true Palander? Was there really an error in his table of logarithms? How realistic is the measurement made by Jules Verne's heroes ? Read the article...

Jules Verne is one of the few writers who did not suffer a kind of oblivion after his death. He was published, sold and read continuously throughout the twentieth century, never forgotten, in both Francophone and in Anglophone countries worldwide. Even during his lifetime, the French novelist and playwright became an icon, an archetype separate from the man and his writings. Today, there are two Jules Vernes. One is the famous writer whose works appear in prestigious literary collections such as La Pléiade and who ranks as one of the most translated authors of all time, according to the UNESCO’s Index Translationum. The other Jules Verne is an icon, an archetype associated with exciting stories about adventure, discovery, exploration, risk, and dangers. Why and how did this split occur? The following article, by Jean-Michel Margot (Vice-président of the North American Jules Verne Society, Inc.) attempts to answer this question by showing how these two words of five letters each, «Jules Verne» became a popular phrase synonymous with both modernity and adventure, action and risk. To read in Verniana #6.

USA : Jules Verne’s home study to be recreated in Washington.
The Museum of Science Fiction in Washington, DC, covering the history of the genre across the arts (movies, television, books, music, art, comics, etc.) and providing a narrative on its relationship to the real world, is expected to open in 2017. It promises to be completely amazing, offering a dizzying array of characters, props and other awesomeness from Star Trek, Dune and the novels of Isaac Asimov to name just a few. There's also plans for a life-size replica of H.G. Wells' time machine, a 1:10 scale model of the Nautilus from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and the Jules Verne’s study in his home in Amiens, will be recreated in the Creators gallery.
