While the odds of ever getting to see a David Fincher version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are now slim to none, an alternate version of the tale has just been purchased. Sony Pictures has acquiered a spec script called Captain Nemo, written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The pair are best known for co-creating the hit Superman show Smallville, but also worked on the scripts for films such as Spider-Man 2 (the good one, from Sam Raimi), Shanghai Noon and I Am Number Four. The script, which will be produced by Maleficent team Joe Roth and Palak Patel.

Distributor The Juice has signed a deal with US company Vision Films Entertainment for the exclusive right to two new films based on Jules Verne's stories. One, Freedom Force, is a 4 D attraction, in which we follow the adventures of four children who are sent back in time to the pages of Jules Verne's stories. They encounter characters from A Journey to the Center of the Earth or 20,000 Leagues under the Sea among others, and they must return these characters back to the pages of the books, setting history straight and not mixing up anything as they go.

Eight years ago, Alex Kirstukas ’14 opened up a book by a favorite author and felt his world turn upside down. The book, a modern translation of Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, included an explanation that most of Verne’s books in the English-speaking world are not an accurate portrayal of his work. Instead, they are heavily abridged versions full of errors and changes ranging from political censorship to inaccurate scientific details. So Kirstukas took up a French translation project with the hope of showing the real Verne to the English-speaking world. The project, the first complete English translation of Verne’s longest novel, The Children of Captain Grant, evolved into an independent study course at St. Olaf College and opportunities to present on the process in front of both peers and a national audience.
