Say what you will about T-Mobile’s recent moves, the company has managed to rattle a cage or two lately.
Richard Platt's insight:

More on the T-Mobile strategy to win more customers, these guys are fun to watch taking on the other players they are not playing by the other guys rules of engagement, and with that alone, I'm giving the edge to T-Mobile.  Also to note that they increased 4.4M subscribers in 2013, and that is nothing to sneeze at....just saying

Mostly just Intersting, but with some use case development 3D printing has legs and all sorts of applications.  We see the business model as another area that will need revamping as well.

A Crowded Market Awaits Apple's iWatch

A Crowded Market Awaits Apple's iWatch | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Here is a list that provides a glimpse at the products that Apple’s iWatch will need to compete with after its release.
Richard Platt's insight:

Apple, Samsung, and then the others join Intel in the smartwatch lineup  - Game On, may the best device win, and that tethering to a smart phone thing that Samsung and Apple have done, is well limiting to say the least (and a lame way to get people to buy it, since it is merely redundant to the functionality on the phone and that value of that is what?).

With Apple's 50% manufacturing yield issues make this a tougher go to market thing that they likely expected.  Apple had better get some of those experienced manufacturing engineers to work, on the problems, - oh yeah that's right its outsourced to Foxconn in China - never mind I don't have much hope for Apple's chances.

At this point we give Intel the edge on this, but hey have a look at these others.

MIT vs. IDEO: Opposing Approaches Design the Internet of Things | Innovation Insights | Wired.com | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Image: keoni101/Flickr Designing for the Internet of Things (IoT) may seem like it is technology driven, but there is another approach worth consideration.
Richard Platt's insight:

We know Marcus, he's a good chap, but when it comes to design of anything, including devices and platforms for IoT, we counter his preference of Art vs. Engineering approach that it isn't one or the other, it's both.  Engineering the process,  having & using the tools for functionality and knowing what the customers and end users really want and need 1st. Then through knowing what all the ingredients are then you can truly enable the Art approach of turning the solutions into works of beauty and elegance.

It is both Art and Engineering, and I learned that basic approach by working on Bonsai for going on now +23 years. Well in advance of my degreee in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and applying that towards the process of innovating

CES 2014: Interoperability Could See Home Automation Go Mainstream | MIT Technology Review

CES 2014: Interoperability Could See Home Automation Go Mainstream | MIT Technology Review | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Smart home appliances could become more common thanks to efforts by major companies including Lowe’s and Staples to make gadgets compatible.
Richard Platt's insight:

"most of the connected home products on show at CES and available on the market today aren’t yet able to link up to those systems. And other companies made announcements at the show suggesting they plan to go it alone, releasing ranges of smart home gadgets only compatible with each other. Samsung, for example, used its main CES press conference to announce a system that links up washing machines, air conditioners, and kitchen appliances with its TVs, phones, tablets, and smart watch. The company said it would allow other companies to program their gadgets to work with that system, but didn’t say whether the devices would be compatible with any efforts to unify connected home devices."

Change or Die

Change or Die | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it

All leadership comes down to this: changing people's behavior. Why is that so hard? Science offers some surprising new answers...

Richard Platt's insight:

I once had one of my senior manager clients complain about the statement of "innovate or die" - the necessity of adapting because the firm's future is dependent on doing so.  Clearly he was resisting the idea of being able to make the necessary changes.  The only thing we would add is that change personally or at an organizational level is tough stuff to master, and most companies who attempt it fail miserably - we strongly suggest getting a change agent who's done it before to help you.    Please see our fellow curators comments below:

Matthew Delmarter's insight:

What if you were given this choice? How would you react?

This article offers some interesting comments on the science of behavioural change. Even when somebody's life is on the line, the numbers show that most of us will not change our habits.

So how to enforce change in somebody's behaviour? Or more importantly, change our own behaviour?

Here are some take-home comments I zoomed in on...

  • Instead of trying to motivate with the "fear of dying", inspire a new vision of the "joy of living" - convincing them they can feel better, not just live longer. That means enjoying the things that make daily life pleasurable, like making love or even taking long walks without the pain caused by their disease. "Joy is a more powerful motivator than fear".

  • Radical, sweeping, comprehensive changes are often easier for people than small, incremental ones.

  • Don't go it alone. Accept help and support - in fact, look for it. "If you look at people after coronary-artery bypass grafting two years later, 90% of them have not changed their lifestyle" - conversely when buttressed with weekly support groups with other patients, as well as attention from dieticians, psychologists, nurses, and instructors, over 77% of one group of patients did successfully change their lifestyle.

  • The cumulative weight of experience makes it harder to change.

  • People think they're leading an interesting life when they haven't learned anything in 20 or 30 years. What happens if you don't work at mental rejuvenation? People who live to 85 have a 50-50 chance of being senile. While the issue for heart patients is "change or die," the issue for everyone is "change or lose your mind."
