China's pirates turn their backs on wearable tech | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Wearable gadgets are billed as the next big thing in technology but China's tech counterfeiters are shunning the category.
Richard Platt's insight:

Interesting that not  even the knock off kings will copy your crappy wearable tech design, might be a hint to get better at what you are designing

Continual downsizing of technology means that researchers have to develop ever more ingenious methods of packaging and protecting their tiny devices.
Richard Platt's insight:

That's the way to do, solve complex problems is doing it at the same time.  We admit we are biased since we teach this to engineers and others.  ;-)

How Intel Gets Social Responsibility Just Right | TIME.com

How Intel Gets Social Responsibility Just Right | TIME.com | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Intel co-founder Andy Grove once noted that some of his fundamental views on running a business were based on reading Peter Drucker’s foundational work, The Practice of Management, 30 or so years after its publication in 1954.
Richard Platt's insight:
Now this is how Social Responsibility is done, Drucker laid it out and yet there are so few that heed what he wrote. We professionally use so much of Drucker's work in our work at the S+IG as foundation to what we do that we are surprised that so many do not follow one of the founding fathers of modern management theory and had laid out to follow,...ahhh but for the time to read, understand and apply this to your own business.

How ‘intrapreneurship’ can help big companies think and move like startups

How ‘intrapreneurship’ can help big companies think and move like startups | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
You don’t have to be a startup to go lean -- even the largest companies can re-learn how to be nimble, think different, and innovate.
Richard Platt's insight:

Got this t-shirt when I was at Intel (Systematic Innovation Program - resulting in $212.5M for the company).  So we know that intrapreneurship is a must do that can really help the top and bottom line of a company.  But the rules of intrapreneurship are different, and you cannot pull it off without a senior level manager, Snr VP and above sponsorship, otherwise you get smoked by internal politics. and you had better deliver on what you say you can do.

When trying to find innovation, look for the intersection of the physical and digital worlds

When trying to find innovation, look for the intersection of the physical and digital worlds | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Virtual supermarkets? Consumer-designed products? The distinction between physical and digital is becoming a thing of the past, as digital-physical innovation becomes the key to enterprise success.

Via 15marches
Richard Platt's insight:

B2C - Get your digital marketing and customer feedback game on

B2B - "Physical components of a supply chain, such as trucks, pallets, warehouses, even individual packages, are being digitally-enabled with sensors and actuators that allow data and analysis for on-the-spot action. Companies that capture and integrate that information gain the ability to dynamically manage costs for serving even the smallest segments of their markets and the flexibility to determine the best inventory allotments based on supply and demand predictions. Using real-time data, these companies also can find the best transport methods by weighing predicted customer service outcomes against the impact on their carbon footprint."

Innovation can cause serious reactions among legislators and incumbent players. Here are three industry example.

Via S. Diez de Medina Ph.D.
Richard Platt's insight:

This isn't a surprise to us here at the S+IG, but if you haven't had this experience where politics gets in the way of a good innovation,.....well you just haven't done enough innovating to know, because if you do it right, you will actually make enemies (the status quo) and make no bones about it, they are against you changing their cozy view on the world.  -- And now you you know why I have a somewhat confrontive style when it comes to doing the innovation thingy

Richard Platt's insight:

Companies seeking to implement these types of programs should consider joint implementation to take advantage of complementarity effects and spreading the costs over more programs,” the authors write. “In addition, companies should realize that the payback of many of these programs may not occur immediately or in the short run.”

Graphene Batteries Could Offer 5-Second iPhone Charging

Graphene Batteries Could Offer 5-Second iPhone Charging | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it

Researchers at UCLA have discovered a way to make graphene batteries that charge fast, are inexpensively produced, non-toxic, and efficient.

The micro-supercapacitors created by Kaner and El-Kady are highly bendable and twistable and will be ideal for future flexible displays, e-paper, and wearable electronics.

Graphene batteries sound almost too good to be true. In addition to super fast charging, they don’t have any negative environmental impact. They are biodegradable and even compostable.

“We are now looking for industry partners to help us mass-produce our graphene micro-supercapacitors,” Kaner said.

Ryanair Ltd. is an Irish low-cost airline. Its headquarters is located on the grounds of Dublin Airport in Swords, County Dublin, Ireland, with its primary operational bases at Dublin Airport and London Stansted Airports.

Watch out shake up coming to on-line bookings and many other things related to the travel industry and Google will show the way by disrupting the current business models of most of the primary on-line ticketing that we've been using for a few years now..
