Wondering What Happened to the Venerable PC? It turned into a Steam Box

Wondering What Happened to the Venerable PC? It turned into a Steam Box | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Last night, Valve announced and showed off a collection of 13 different third-party Steam Boxes at its CES event. What Valve didn't do was rank them for you.
Richard Platt's insight:
This rather cheeky critique of these Steam Boxes - an up-powered version of the PC that runs on the Steam OS - (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_Machine). If you think about it Windows 8, (which we dislike almost as much as we did Vista), was such an utter failure for the market that it prompted more to enter into the OS space - and heretofore the relatively unknown Valve Corporation. Some will say we already know about this, but I can bet you that just about everyone else hasn't who isn't a gaming / high performance power user has yet to hear of it.

Intel's 3DFET SOCs Aim To Capture Top Of The Mobile Market

Intel's 3DFET SOCs Aim To Capture Top Of The Mobile Market | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
We have all been watching and speculating on the mobile market for some time. It's abundantly clear that the market is infinitely dynamic, and that change is rapid and somewhat unpredictable.
Richard Platt's insight:

Definitely read this take on Intel, its process technology and the marketplace, as well as some well targeted, albeit veiled, points about SemiWiki.com being uninformed and paid spokepersons for other firms (we know them to be TSMC, Synopsys, Cadence, and a couple others).

The comment section at the bottom though is an awesome give and take between the analyst and other investors some of which are quite informed in their own right.

Can Wearable Tech Really Be Stylish?

Can Wearable Tech Really Be Stylish? | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY is one of those space-age-sounding concepts that we may have imagined we’d be wearing by 2020 had we envisioned that year from the Eighties, but it isn’t generally thought of as stylish – until now.

Excellent question, and one still begging to be answered effectively, as of yet no dominant design or platform has emerged, but expect many to get stuck into this effort....

Panasonic Life+Screen Smart TV: Can A Smart TV Actually Be Useful? | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Panasonic is working on a new kind of smart TV that seems, at least, slightly less grossly useless than the typical smart TV ends up being once you connect it to, oh, say, anything. It's going to be in all the new Panasonic TVs this year.

“Little Data” Matters, Too

“Little Data” Matters, Too | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Big data is an invaluable source of insight, but companies with limited access to analytics can still find information to improve their business.
Richard Platt's insight:

If youre in R&D / Tech Dev / NPD for any period of time, you use "Little Data", this article goes a long way towards helping you beter understand what the real world is when we talk about "Little Data" from an innovation / R&D / Tech Dev / NPD p.o.v.

As to the quantifiable self and the use of the term 'little data' in that context, well the point is still true here as well, data (big or little) is pretty much useless unless you know what you're looking for, you've got to have an algorithm that acts as a screening agent for what is important and useful.  In addition do not confuse data points / information for knowledge (that requires discrimination of the data), nor is it wisdom (as that requires an understanding of the system and operating by principle)

Just when Hollywood thought it had Netflix figured out that red envelope company flipped the script creating a playbook for any business that aspires...
Richard Platt's insight:

"The Path of the Disruptor" - this article very nicely outlines the disruption process and we must admit to smirk on our faces to watch the cable companies and the networks squirm in response (with anti-customer tactics like ABC last week demanding that users log in with cable company id) that will ultimately fail against a disruptor.

Definitely worth the read

Though it tracks your steps and sleep, Razer's Nabu band is more than just a body monitor. It also functions like a smartwatch by pairing to your phone and serving notifications from connected services.

OK so it's different than the rest in a better than kind of way, but how come we still get the feeling that this is still kitchy stuff, and not all that uber useful?  (Because we don't think the real use cases have been captured and thus we suggest waiting for version2.0 instead)
