Students Are The New Digital Influencers

Students Are The New Digital Influencers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"At a young age, students are introduced to a digital megaphone that will highlight their voice and experiences to the entire world with the click of a button. As students are taught to be positive role models in their communities, they should also learn to be great digital citizens and leaders. Unlike behavior in the school hallways or on the playground, online interactions are recorded — forever. The sooner students learn how to shape their digital footprint and the responsible ways to interact online, the better."

“Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being.” –Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Learning by doing is by no means a new concept, but experiential learning theory takes it a step further by encouraging students to reflect on what they’ve done and how they’ve done it. As it turns out, this is the kind of learning behaviour today’s employers are looking for.

Knowing the Difference Between Digital Skills and Digital Literacies, and Teaching Both

Knowing the Difference Between Digital Skills and Digital Literacies, and Teaching Both | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Maha Bali writes: "We often hear people talk about the importance of digital knowledge for 21st-century learners. Unfortunately, many focus on skills rather than literacies. Digital skills focus on what and how. Digital literacy focuses on why, when, who, and for whom."

Via Mary Reilley Clark
Elizabeth E Charles's insight:

Maha Bali's article is worth sharing widely with anyone who needs to be nudged ever so gently into the 21st century of education. (We're 16% through it, folks!) Bali addresses the need to teach about digital skills and literacy in an authentic context, not a vacuum, and gives many concrete examples for doing that.

I recently did a lesson on blogging with a 6th grade class. We looked at several tween and teen blogs, then reviewed good digital citizenship practices emphasizing student safety and copyright. Finally, each student created a blog on Blogger. Will they make mistakes? Probably. (When I specifically told them to keep it school appropriate, with nothing in the blog they wouldn't be allowed to do at school, and one student immediately started searching for "Call of Duty 3" images!) Will we all learn something from this? Absolutely.

10 Digital Citizenship Resources: The Web in the Classroom, Part 3 | Tech Learning

10 Digital Citizenship Resources: The Web in the Classroom, Part 3 | Tech Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

With the opening of  classroom walls allowing for virtual journeys on the worldwide web comes the need to provide classroom educators and students with resources regarding proper learning and citizenship on the internet. I believe this is essential to the success of any e-learning, blended learning, and on-line learning program. It is important that educators teach and model proper digital citizenship. It is equally important that the school curriculum has digital  citizenship standards embedded in the curriculum. Many of the free resources listed below provide some wonderful possibilities for educators committed to the amazing learning opportunities the internet provides.

Kedryn bray's curator insight, January 6, 2016 9:47 PM

She makes very good points about being able to use the internet as a learning tool in the classroom, it would be a very good resource for children to be hands on and being able to visualize some lessons. Plus, she posts very reliable and useful links to more information in using tech in the classroom.

Innovate My School - The end of ‘just Google it’: Why students need to be digitally literate

Innovate My School - The end of ‘just Google it’: Why students need to be digitally literate | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Digital literacy is about more than the practically competent use of devices. It’s about students being able to use technology in a critical way in relation to wider social responsibilities and global citizenship. FutureLab (2010) propose that being “digitally literate is to have access to a broad range of practices and cultural resources that you are able to apply to digital tools. It is the ability to make and share meaning in different modes and formats; to create, collaborate and communicate effectively and to understand how and when digital technologies can best be used to support these processes.’

It’s a very broad church, so to speak, and the definitions don’t get any clearer the more you wade through academia. The definition of digital literacy varies from engaging with media through to basic technical ability.

DigComp 2.0: The Digital Competence Framework for Citizens. Update Phase 1: the Conceptual Reference Model. - EU Science Hub

The European Digital Competence Framework for Citizens, also known as DigComp, offers a tool to improve citizens’ digital competence. DigComp was first published in 2013 and has become a reference for many digital competence initiatives at both European and Member State levels. This document introduces DigComp 2.0. It constitutes phase 1 of the update of the framework which focuses on the conceptual reference model, new vocabulary and streamlined descriptors. The current document also gives examples of how DigComp is used at the European, national and regional levels.

Revisiting Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants

Revisiting Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As with many ideas which may be simply stated Prensky’s world of ‘Digital Natives and Immigrants’ has been oversimplified and misunderstood. In part this is the danger that comes with relying upon a cultural metaphor and a consequence of society’s love affair with neat dichotomies.

Via Nik Peachey
Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, October 23, 2015 9:50 AM

"Prensky’s analysis continues to spark debate and that is a positive thing. The reality of how our supposedly Digital Natives or Immigrants engage with technology and learning reveals a more complex landscape than a simple dichotomy allows for. A richer subculture analysis is required where individual narrative of technologies meanings may be revealed"

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, October 24, 2015 12:06 PM

Well written and relevant...instructional designers often talk about this. Thanks Nik!
