The 23 Things You Can Change Quickly for Improving Writing [Infographic]

The 23 Things You Can Change Quickly for Improving Writing [Infographic] | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Improving writing skills ranks as one of the most common pursuits teachers encourage in their students, even in the digital age. That’s because teachers know solid writing ability is so much more than just writing stellar essays and book reports, or becoming the next big name in fiction. More importantly, it’s about improving communication, mastering self-expression, and exercising the creative voice inherent in all learners.

Teaching International Students: Six Ways to Smooth the Transition

Teaching International Students: Six Ways to Smooth the Transition | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Dear professor, I am Chang [a pseudonym], an international student of your research class. I’d like to ask if I can use a recorder (only voice) in your class, because I’m afraid that I can’t understand class content at once.

Sincerely,

Chang

This was an e-mail that I received before the first day of class, exemplifying the anxiety international students may experience as undergraduate/graduate students in a foreign country. My response to the student was to give it a try first and see if he could understand the course content or not. I also tried to comfort him by saying that all class materials would be posted on Blackboard. Guess what? The student did just fine in my class and never needed to record lectures.

12 tips for great speaking | Learning with 'e's | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In my previous post, I reflected on 18 years of keynote speaking in academic conferences. I mentioned that I had spoken at over 250 international events in more than 35 countries. In nearly two decades, I guess you learn quite a lot. If you are lucky enough to be invited to address an audience of your peers at a conference, a lot will depend on what you say and the manner in which you say it. You want your speech to be memorable, inspiring and thought provoking. You'll also need to be convincing if you want to put your arguments across effectively. So I'll share some of the top tips I recommend for keynote speakers.

Control those tabs ! Five web browser tab tips. – | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
This was me. Does it sound like you ?

Too many tabs open in my browser …I think 64 was my record. In just one window. I am also a great “that is too messy, so I will open a nice, clean window” (but not close the other open ones) kind of woman.
But….I can’t close the open tabs because some must be useful, this is DAYS worth of tab-opening right here.
Can’t find what I want, so…I’ll just open that tab again, rather than locate the right tab.
My laptop is slowing down because displaying the fiddly bits on the open pages is hogging memory.
I know I will use these nine web pages each workday, and am sick of opening them each morning.
Oh damn!! I didn’t mean to close that tab, and now I can’t remember how exactly I got to it

How to be a better speaker: presenting and pitching tips

How to be a better speaker: presenting and pitching tips | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The thought of standing on stage and talking to a packed auditorium might make you want to dry-heave in the corner. But public speaking can be one of the most effective tools for self-promotion in a designer's armoury, instantly giving you credibility as an expert and supercharging word-of-mouth about your services.

However, the skills involved in public speaking are just as valuable off-stage. Being able to talk confidently about your work in any situation – while pitching, during an interview, over a beer – is a fundamental design skill that differentiates the good from the exceptional. It's a key part of how to network as a creative.

Control Alt Achieve: Write Right with Google Tools | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Writing is a skill that crosses all subject areas and all grade levels. No matter what you teach, it is critical for your students to be able to express their ideas clearly when writing.

There are a multitude of ways for students to improve their writing, including many technology tools that come from Google or that work with G Suite. With these technology tools, the writing process can be improved at all stages from planning to writing to self editing to peer editing to assessment to revising to publishing.

Over the years I have done many blog posts on tech tools for the various stages of the writing process. To make it more convenient, I have pulled together all of those different resources into this one post. See below for an overview of Google tools that can be used to help students and teachers through the writing process.

A blog about creativity and innovation in the library at the University of York.

We won an award! York just received a Bronze Marketing Award from CILIP's Publicity and Public Relations Group at the annual PPRG Conference, held in Birmingham in January. It was in relation to the work we'd done on our Induction project - in 2016 (and then this year as well) we got rid of the big orientation games, and ran it like a marketing campaign. It worked really well and we got a great response - some elements weren't successful and we improved on them this year.

Study Tips Backed By Science | Edudemic | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When we think of “studying,” we probably have similar images in mind: long, endless hours sitting in the same spot, pouring over the same material, trying almost desperately to commit it to memory. These tedious study methods are often seen as tried and true, despite no actual scientific evidence proving that they are. Maybe you had some random success after pulling an all-nighter, or your friend managed to get an A on a test they waited until the last minute to prepare for, but these shouldn’t be the study habits you resort to on a regular basis.
