"Grab some nibbles, pour yourself a drink, and sit down. You’re now ready to immerse yourself in a TV show. And then you notice that CSI Miami is placing Facebook photos of your aunt, uncle, and cousins onto the desk of a perp. Lean forward, and keep your eyes peeled, updates from your Facebook page are about to be incorporated into your favorite TV show’s narrative. (Your best friend becomes the suspect!) As you immerse yourself in the story, the story immerses itself in your social world. In this context, online meets offline and your family and friends will never look the same again!"

As everyone is talking about curation, data visualization is nothing else but the visual cousin of the same trend... attempting again to help us make greater sense of the overwhelming amount of data we are swimming in.
Here is a great video infographic reminding us of what data visualization is all about.

When Google recently hosted a National Academy of Engineering meeting, the head of the company's research department, Alfred Spector, sat down to discuss Google's long-term vision of search and what the company needs to keep innovating. In a few words, better artificial intelligence (A.I.). The Google approach to A.I. uses hybrid artificial intelligence, augmenting computer capabilities with the power of crowd sourcing. With voice, for example, crowd sourcing is used to confirm that a computer has correctly recognized an utterance.

In this article, we examine some of the big data requirements that are partially defined or in early stages of maturity. Any big data vendor worth considering should be able to address these requirements now or in the near future, or confidently explain their position. We sat down with Mike Driscoll, CTO of Metamarkets, a big data company that delivers predictive analytics solutions for digital media, to develop a checklist for evaluating new solutions and their fit criteria against the challenges of big data

That presentation marked the beginning of a year of travel for me. I’ve been MIA on this blog because I’ve traveled the world several times over during the past year meeting with, and investing in, entrepreneurs in emerging markets (20 hour flights, jetlag, numerous speaking engagements, constant meetings and bay area commutes made it challenging to write more than two coherent sentences together in anything other than an investment memo or a quick tweet!) I’ll go into greater detail on each market, and what I invested in and am excited about, in subsequent posts. But as I settle back into NYC, and am surrounded once again by innovation happening in the US market, I am struck by how many learnings can, and need to, cross borders to tackle the problems the world faces today. We now have the components for this in place: infrastructure through the Internet, mobile connectivity in the hands of billions of people throughout the world, and social networks such as facebook and twitter and skype.

I've spent the week trying to get my head around what Web 3.0 really is. It's surprisingly difficult. Even though there has been so much written about it, and so much of the tech press has been talking about it for quite some time now. The hottest buzzword going around the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco wasn't the latest, greatest new social platform. It was Web 3.0.

Is Web 3.0 just hype, or are people actually working with these technologies? Do people even understand what Web 3.0 is? That is what we endeavored to find out when in June 2011, we did a survey of about 200 people to see if they understood and were applying Web 3.0. Some of the answers we got back were expected, but we also did get some surprises.
