If you have been online Twitter or Facebook this week it would be hard to miss the chatter on Klout and their new algorithm. A new algorithm launched on October 26, 2011. There were strong arguments for and against the change. Although Klout stated “a majority of users will see their scores stay the same or go up”, there seems to be more that dropped than not. Many saw a drop of of 15+ points. My personal score dropped 19 points. I am yet to receive an explanation or a response to my email from Klout as to the change and to several other very important questions I asked them. As Danny Brown summarized in the article, “Is Klout Using Our Privacy to Violate our Privacy?” there are concerns that Klout is creating and publicly publishing profiles of minors set to private on Facebook for people who haven’t ever signed up for Klout...

"The future is already here — it's just not very evenly distributed." William Gibson wrote that bon mot, and if he never wrote another word, that insight would be sufficient to guarantee him immortality. Which got me wondering whether the future that is already here might include a class for whom space travel is not merely an interesting idea, but one that is affordable.

A lot of us out there either running a large scale solution or the mom ‘n pop shops understand a lot about creating content then sharing it out across the web. Ask yourself though, what will happen the the lively hood of that content in a month?
Search results, like warm cookies right out of the oven or cool refreshing fruit on a hot summer’s day, are best when they’re fresh. Even if you don’t specify it in your search, you probably want search results that are relevant and recent. Given the incredibly fast pace at which information moves in today’s world, the most recent information can be from the last week, day or even minute, and depending on the search terms, the algorithm needs to be able to figure out if a result from a week ago about a TV show is recent, or if a result from a week ago about breaking news is too old. We completed our Caffeine web indexing system last year, which allows us to crawl and index the web for fresh content quickly on an enormous scale. Building upon the momentum from Caffeine, today we’re making a significant improvement to our ranking algorithm that impacts roughly 35 percent of searches and better determines when to give you more up-to-date relevant results for these varying degrees of freshness... Brian Rice wrote this piece for Business 2 Community "What is in store for 2012? With only two months remaining until the end of the year, there is no better time than now to pause and take a look towards the future." Here are a few things that caught my attention: Elias Roman, CEO and co-founder of Songza First, the easy prediction: more and more of the information we consume on a daily basis (from news to product reviews to entertainment) will come via the social media channels we have opted into and, more specifically, from the information filters we have chosen to subscribe to in those channels. ****Net: In the short term, more information will come from more sources delivered through fewer channels. Tony Ellison CEO from Shoplet.com Social media can insert the missing human touch and allow mankind tap into the full potential of the internet. Because of this, it is going to transform eCommerce as we know it. Loren McDonald, VP of Industry Relations at Silverpop The convergence of mobile, social, local and email, or “mocial,” is forcing marketers to change the way they interact with customers and prospects to ensure that they are where their customers and prospects are, all the time. In 2012 and beyond, savvy marketers will need to cross promote between all channels. Read full article [http://bit.ly/um8j7u]

This cross-genre, new format, online story development sheet should be printed A3 and ideas for each area can be sketched in. It helps media creators understand how to develop across multiple online channels and spaces and what fragments of the story can be cross connected. It is suggested that you number each instance with the 'release' date to help aid the campaign thinking. The axes indicate the likely 'maintenance' required - top right most maintenance (rich living environments) and bottom left least maintenance (ad hoc textual updates). NOTE: All the below can be on PC or mobile or console.

Elias Roman, CEO and co-founder of Songza provides a truly insightful glimpse into understanding the major revolution that curation is bringing about. Here is what he says: "First, the easy prediction: more and more of the information we consume on a daily basis (from news to product reviews to entertainment) will come via the social media channels we have opted into and, more specifically, from the information filters we have chosen to subscribe to in those channels.
Net: In the short term, more information will come from more sources delivered through fewer channels. Second: increasing adoption of and participation in social media will lead to a worsening of the signal-to-noise ratio both for ‘social’ information and ‘other’ (professional, or interest-based, or globally relevant) information. Net: What once felt efficient and real-time will start to feel crowded and blurry. Third: in response to worsening of the signal-to-noise ratio, we will see significant innovation in filtering and curating technologies that allow us to:
a) better separate ‘social’ information and identities from ‘other’ information and identities and
b) access personalized digests of what are effectively already digests of what is happening around us. This will address the symptoms but not necessarily the root cause of the problem. Net: Expect more ‘stream management’ solutions to make your radar. Finally: the importance (and reach) of vetted information filters (those people we follow, whether or not we know them personally, because we trust in their ability to pass on the most relevant information to us) will grow exponentially, as people realize that managing their information streams requires pruning down to only the most impactful and relevant filters.
Net: In the long term, more information will come from fewer sources delivered through fewer channels.
These sources will be more thoroughly (and more democratically) vetted than ever before."
I find these three anticipations so much on target and in tune with my own vision, that I cannot but thank Brian Rice, the author/editor of the original article (The Future of Social Media: 38 Experts Share Their Predictions For 2012) in which I have found this absolute gem. A Must-bookmark reference. 10/10 (Image credit: RIA Fine Art Studio: http://riafineart.com/art/the-whisper/ For information: sales@willowrise.com)

Pamela Vaughn just posted this on Hubspot "Twitter adds two new features to search functionality: "Top News" and "Top People" Intro: "Turns out Twitter has been a little sneaky today. With no word from the official Twitter Blog, it looks like the microblogging service is slowly and quietly rolling out two new features to its search functionality: "Top News" and "Top People." This afternoon, GigaOm reported that, for certain lucky users, Twitter.com now includes a "Top News" section at the top of search results. These "Top News" results highlight relevant, timely news articles about the topic being searched. Marketing Takeaway **There has yet to be an official announcement from Twitter about the launch of these new features and when they'll be available to all users, but marketers should be aware that they're coming.
**We don't yet know how Twitter is determining which articles to feature in its top news section, and they don't appear to be tweets, **but once we do know, marketers should understand if and how they can leverage it to get their content in front of more Twitter searchers.
