Neural Networking: Your Brain's Internal Connections Operate Like a Country Club: Scientific American Gallery | information analyst | Scoop.it

The researchers liken the favored networks to a country club setting, in which people with a great number of social connections bond with other connection-rich socialites. In the brain, the socialites (the hubs with the most connections, shown in red in the image) included the regions that aggregate and process many kinds of information—the superior frontal and superior parietal cortex, for example, as well as the subcortical hippocampus, putamen and thalamus.

Finding Credible Information Sources in Social Networks Based on Content & Social Structure

http://www.parc.com/content/attachments/finding-credible-information-preprint.pdf

(PDF DOWNLOAD) "A task of primary importance for social network
users is to decide whose updates to subscribe to in order to
maximize the relevance, credibility, and quality of the information
received. To address this problem, we conducted an experiment
designed to measure the extent to which different factors in online
social networks affect both explicit and implicit judgments of
credibility. The results of the study indicate that both the topical
content of information sources and social network structure
affect source credibility. Based on these results, we designed a
novel method of automatically identifying and ranking social
network users according to their relevance and expertise for
a given topic. We performed empirical studies to compare a
variety of alternative ranking algorithms and a proprietary
service provided by a commercial website specifically designed
for the same purpose. Our findings show a great potential for
automatically identifying and ranking credible users for any
given topic."

Why The Recent Google Reader Changes Are Not Good For Content Curators | Regular Geek

Why The Recent Google Reader Changes Are Not Good For Content Curators | Regular Geek | information analyst | Scoop.it

From the article:

"When Google Reader made its recent changes, the first thought many people had was what RSS reading options were there?

I think many of those people complained about the lack of the old sharing and the loss of RSS feeds for peoples shares.

This means that the people who used Google Reader were not really content consumers, they were content curators.

Granted, I am making sweeping generalizations here, but the typical complaints make sense only in this view.

I wrote a critique of the changes, both good and bad, when the new Reader was available.

So, the typical complaints regarding the new Google Reader center on a few items:"

Internet of Yesterday & Today: 1996 vs. 2011 [INFOGRAPHIC]

Internet of Yesterday & Today: 1996 vs. 2011 [INFOGRAPHIC] | information analyst | Scoop.it

This article by Charlie White

for Mashable, brings an informative look back at the growth of and changes in the Internet by way of an Infographic.

Some people may look at past growth as an indicator to the future and others will simply go on a trip down Memory Lane, but I think many will find this interesting.

A quote from Bill Clinton, included in the Infographic sums up much of the change in the last 15 years:

"When I took office, only high energy physicists had ever heard of what is called the World Wide Web.  Now even my cat has a page"

Google Releases Think Insights Trend & Research Hub

Google Releases Think Insights Trend & Research Hub | information analyst | Scoop.it

Google has graduated Think Insights from beta. This tool now compiles real-time data from Google search and other platforms, combining those facts with additional studies, infographics, and more.

Users can find the site at ThinkwithGoogle.com, and then explore tools that focus on different sectors of the virtual world. Google described the site as an "information and resource hub for marketers" in the Official Google Blog post announcing Think Insights' graduation.

The post also indicated that Google will continue to use the site as a data-centric storehouse for "consumer trends, marketing insights, and industry research."

That storehouse is filled with specific insights from Google (frequently compiled as infographics) as well as studies, reports, a research library, a fact and statistic sheet, and planning tools. While some of the information comes directly from Google, a large portion of the studies are the result of independent or collaborative research...
