In our upcoming October design issue, one of the many fascinating feature stories we’ve lined up is a lengthy profile of Pinterest and its elusive CEO, Ben Silbermann. That story goes live later this week, but until then, here's an infographic about Pinterest, created by Fast Company's staff and designed by our own Ted Keller. In this profusion of figures, you find out a few, key things about the image-sharing service. For one, it’s dominated by women. Second, something about its layout and culture stokes an enormous buying impulse. And third, major brands are getting in on the act. It’s not a stretch to say that soon, at least on retail sites, a Pinterest button might become as ubiquitous as a Facebook Like. Check out the infographic, or tour the major findings in the accompanying slide show...

"Jonah Peretti, a co-founder of Huffington Post and CEO of Buzzfeed, said at PandoMonthly tonight in New York that he doesn’t care about SEO anymore. He views it as a broken system that optimizes for robots, not humans." Erin Griffith reports on Pandodaily. “Media and content are human businesses, and it’s a problem for humans to give so much power to Google, which is a robot” he said. Without saying Google is Skynet and evil, more and more people now see the flaws compared to what information networks like Twitter can produce (not saying the latter is perfect either). His conclusion is that you shouldn't care about SEO anymore but I think there's an even more compelling reason to move to Curation. Google is increasingly taking social signals into account so that Social is becoming the new SEO no matter which angle you take it from: - whether because your audience will find you first on social networks - whether because your content will be well positioned in Search results because human curators will pick it up (and therefore Google too). The debate whether SEO still matters or not is not important. What's relevant is that great content that please human genuine interests will surface more than it used to thanks to the work of human curators.

As many as 10 to 15 percent of all social media reviews will be fake by 2014, according to the Gartner Inc. Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Inc. also predicted in a release that at least two Fortune 500 companies will be sued by the Federal Trade Commission due to fake reviews in the next two years, citing the 2009 decision that deemed paying for positive reviews without disclosing it false advertising.
“Marketing, customer service and IT social media managers looking to use reviews, fans and ‘likes’ to improve their brand’s reputation on social media must beware of the potential negative consequences on corporate reputation and profitability,” said Ed Thompson, vice president and analyst at Gartner, in a release.

And it’s likely during the commercial breaks: Television technology firm Ericsson released the statistic that, on a weekly basis, 62% of consumers use social media as they watch TV. This percentage is shocking as it is 18% above what Ericsson reported in 2011. Not only is it an increase, but it directly affects the way marketers think about using social media marketing as part of an overall campaign.

"Ted Rubin believes in the power of social networks. As the chief marketing officer for E.L.F. Cosmetics from 2008 to 2010, Rubin used Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and a network of bloggers to make the company a “social media giant,” according to AdWeek. Now he’s chief social marketing officer at Collective Bias, a social shopper media company, as well as a speaker and contributor to Mashable and I.B.M. Smarter Commerce. Last month, Social Media Marketing magazine recognized Rubin as the most followed chief marketing officer on Twitter, with more than 80,000 followers. He may be best known for coining the phrase “Return on Relationship,” and his book of that name will be published this fall from Tate Publishing. In a recent conversation, Rubin explained his theories on using social media for relationship-building, and how brands can do this at events."
