When it comes to Facebook, the metric looked at right away is Likes. It’s the most front-facing and sexy number on Facebook. It sounds nice to say that you have a bunch of likes.
Unfortunately, it may be the most meaningless number for your brand. A Like shows interest, but it doesn’t show engagement. There are other measurements on Facebook that can tell you much more.

As a first time Community Manager at a consumer internet start-up, I didn’t know where to begin when I grabbed hold of the reigns at SkinnyScoop a year ago. Lucky for me, my ‘can-do’ attitude, willingness to wear many hats and varied mix of previous job experience have proven to be essential in acting as the point person for a quickly growing group of people. It’s been fun to discover that bringing together a group of people online is much like how one may go about making friends (and friends of your new friends) offline – all of the same rules apply. So what are the ‘rules’, anyway? If you’re a new Community Manager looking to get your head in the game, my ‘Five Tips for Building a Start-up Community’ are for you:

I don't believe you can be successful if people do not get a true sense of who you are in business or in your personal life. People want to do business with who they know. If you attempt to put forth a false image or representation of yourself, I think people can sniff that out, in the same way dogs can sense who loves them and who does not. If you look at the popularity of golf in the corporate world, I think that it occurred because companies got an opportunity to see people handle themselves under stress. Was that person honest about their handicap? Did they ask for a few mulligans? Did they blame the wind for a bad shot? Social Media is no different. I like to say that nobody buys anything important from a stranger except for gasoline and Gummi Bears. If you cannot give your audience a sense of who you truly are, and gain acceptance for same, good luck getting them to sign on the dotted line.

Just last Thursday Facebook officially announced that they had passed this significant milestone. The number is sizeable and the moment is worth noting but it is the other facts and figures that accompany this fact that put into perspective how much social networks have woven themselves into the fabric of our lives. These include photos downloaded, the total number of friend connections and songs downloaded. While Flickr, Instagram, Pinterest and other photo sharing sites are significant, the Facebook ecosystem makes them look like an afterthought- learn more about the statistics on Facebook along with additional facts and numbers at the article link.

Did you know that Twitter is grabbing more new registrations than Facebook, with more than half of its entire userbase compromised of people who have signed up in the last year, compared to just 19 percent for Mark Zuckerberg’s baby? What if I said that almost a quarter (23 percent) of Facebook users check their account five or more times each day, Twitter users are 33 percent more likely to be Democrats or – sorry Foursquare – that 74 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the concept of ‘checking in’. These, and several other amazing social media statistics, can be found in the infographic on social media statistics...

While most people look forward to Fridays, I dread them. Picture me walking through quicksand after a night of no A/C, which happened to me last night. So, a Thursday night in Phoenix, Arizona, with no air conditioning, and a Friday to wake up to, means I know I’m going to get pretty stabby in the morning. It happened, of course. It’s #FollowFriday/#FF, a day on Twitter to recommend to your followers other people you think they’d like to follow. Follow Friday is spam, unless it’s done the right way. To ensure you are practicing #FF correctly, follow these quick steps....

This is a very interesting case study by the team at B2B Content Engine on the impact Content Curation has on a B2B web site's traffic. B2B sites typically have niche audiences which are hard to find from untargetted methods and costly to generate with targeted advertising. What this study shows is that consistent content curation provided not only impressive results on traffic growth but also lead generation conversion at a 12% rate. In addition to many other great benefits such as brand visibility, awareness, etc... It also gives an idea of the volume of content that was required to achieve that, which - compared to what we see users typically achieve on Scoop.it - is very similar and reasonable. It also supports some other best practices we've mentioned already such as: - being multi-channel: traffic doesn't come from one source but combining several channels (linkedin, twitter, ...) is key; it's what we call the hub model. - frequent publishing: it's not about reaching our massive volumes so much than it is about publishing every week. - use of topic site customization or web site integration to facilitate lead conversions (typically what Scoop.it Business allows to do very simply) - giving context is important: for readers but also for SEO reasons.

Social media—through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content—is a powerful and accessible tool. With these new media tools, governments, nonprofits, corporations, and individuals all have the ability to communicate their messages and participate in conversations with a global audience. Social media allows nonprofits and groups promoting social causes, even those with limited budgets, the opportunity to magnify their voices. In our hyper-connected world, individuals have the tools to effect change, raise millions of dollars, find volunteers, and make a global impact. In an infographic by MPA@UNC, they profile several successful grassroots and nonprofit campaigns, explain tactics that increase the impact of a message, and explore emerging trends in charitable giving and volunteering

Like it or not, Web pages can count your Facebook shares as a "Like." A Facebook Like multiplier bug going around highlighted a feature of the social network that may seem unfair to some: If you send a Web site's link to a friend via a Facebook message or if you post it to your Facebook wall, that Web page's Like counter ticks upward. First noticed by The Wall Street Journal, the feature may rankle some users who don't want to be a part of an overinflated count for some Web site tracking its visitors, or users may feel violated that Facebook knows what you're sending a Friend via "private" messaging.

Hardly a week goes by that we’re not shocked by a new development in the realm of social media marketing. Last week’s big news was the fact that we’re now able to create and upload cover photos on Twitter. A few weeks before that, we learned that the Twitter founders were cooking up an all-new social media network dedicated to quality content curation. What is inbound marketing other than a lifestyle of learning, anyway? We’ve compiled a few of the most mind-boggling stats from Awareness Social Marketing Software’s all-new whitepaper 6 Mind-Blowing Social Media Facts. From ignoring clients on Facebook to Twitter’s brand-new status as a major search engine, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a little surprised at some of these developments:
