At university there is an ongoing debate about whether lectures should be recorded and made available to students. In general, students are extremely in favor of this idea. They argue that they can use lecture recordings when revising the content of the lecture – allowing them to go back to the lecture and listen to bits and pieces that they have not fully understood. Interesting findings. Would be even more interesting if the researchers had looked at the format of the lecture: level of interactivity, use of supporting graphics, pre-reading, learning activities, etc.

Deze bespreking van een metastudie naar samenwerkend leren in het basis- en voortgezet onderwijs laat zien dat een goede voorbereiding, goede ondersteunende leermiddelen en een positieve wederzijdse afhankelijkheid er toe bijdragen dat samenwerkend leren een effectieve manier van leren kan zijn. Opvallend is dat de onderzoeker concludeert dat zelfs een beperkte mate van niet-taakgericht zijn, geen goede leerresultaten oplevert. Afleiding voorkomen, dus!

(From the foreword) The global development towards open education dates back more than ten years. In 2006, several Dutch universities followed suit with the publication of OpenCourseWare. Although several institutions had already embraced the concept of open education for some time, the issue seems to have truly taken hold in the Dutch higher education sector since 2013, largely due to the growing popularity of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The Trend Report supports this conclusion. The report accurately describes the latest developments and challenges facing the Dutch higher education sector in relation to open and online education. The articles also outline a concrete vision on future developments, such as the effects of recognising MOOC results, the impact of digitisation on postgraduate education and other forms of disruptive innovation.

This is the third trend report in a row that Surf, in which Dutch higher education institutions collaborate on educational innovation with ICTs, has published. It features contributions by academics and support staff throughout higher education in the Netherlands, thus reflecting the current state of the art. Although the perspective is wider than MOOCed education, the term MOOC features 430 times, at least once on almost all of its 69 pages. It goes to show that in the Netherlands, but likely in Europe as a whole, there is an intimate link between MOOCs and open education. ‘Open’ here means making use of open licenses (such a creative commons licenses), it stands in contrast with ‘open’ in the sense of for free, without cost, which applies to the courses of the large MOOC platforms (see also the EUA report next http://sco.lt/6QxgvZ).
As indicated, all the topics covered in the report refer to MOOCs. To name a few of them: flexibility and quality, postgraduate education, apps for open education, economics of open education, platforms, recognition of credits, testing and assessment, MOOCs in formal education, learning analytics, student perspectives, privacy and other legal issues. As with the previous trend reports, a useful collection of insights. @pbsloep

A trend analysis on MOOCs from all perspectives: institutional, educational, business, and technical. Interesting to see the insights of dutch scholars on how MOOCs can offer quality education, how can become sustainable business models. Of special interest is the second article about the potential of MOOCs to change education economics, supported with figures.

Tony Bates schrijft een boek, en deelt stukken uit dat boek op voorhand met zijn lezers via zijn blog. Dit is een interessante vraag: is het ADDIE model geschikt voor e-learning?

In de basis is blended learning een leer- en instructiemodel, welke 2 methoden combineert, namelijk het ‘gewone’ klas model en het computer ondersteunde lesmodel. De sterke punten van deze educatieve aanpak is de combinatie van zowel face to face en online lesmethoden in een geïntegreerde educatieve aanpak.

Hoger onderwijs enkel afrekenen op rendement is een te economische aanpak van het HO. Het HO leidt op voor de maatschappij, voor goed burgerschap, en niet enkel voor een economisch rendement.

The Open University is not only the organization pushing the development and innovation of the Quiz Module for Moodle, it’s also recently provided one of the best primers for learning about Moodle’s quiz, the pedagogical theory behind assessment, and showcases the many OU create question types as well. The module is freely available to registered users (and has been posted to Moodle.net), and they estimate about 3 hours to complete it. The conditional release of materials will help to keep you on track.

Meer mensen kunnen zich nu Monteur mechatronica wanen in de serious game CRAFT van kenniscentrum Kenteq. In 25 stappen doorlopen ze een ‘tutorial’ om te ervaren hoe deze nieuwe simulatiegame werkt. Hiermee breidt Kenteq zijn onderzoek uit.

On a global level, higher education policies appear to show two tendencies: more public funding leading to cheaper enrollment fees (Germany, Finland) vs. less public funding and higher tuition fees (UK, US, Netherlands). It is interesting to reflect on how these tendencies affect the future of MOOCs...
