Experiences from Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and how the MOOC could potentially increase diversity, social inclusion & learner engagement | Mark Morley

"There is currently much interest and excitement at the emergence of an educational approach commonly termed the ‘Massive Open Online Course’ or MOOC. ... I feel there is much we can learn from the delivery of MOOCs that can be used to enhance the on-campus experience supplemented by online course material and delivery. This format offers us the opportunity to investigate learning and improve teaching processes, perhaps more similar to the edX approach. It would seem appropriate to collect and use data to inform this process; treating learning and teaching as a field ripe for research, tying in to a research-led approach."

Patricia Daniels's curator insight, January 13, 2013 9:17 AM

Interesting and detailed personal insight into cMOOCs and xMOOCs from a participant. I sincerely hope more learners take the time to reflect and share the experiences they have with this kind of learning context. I find as an educator that the student voice is important and assuming that the developers of MOOCs are prepared to listen to critique, both postive and negative, then this is a valuable factor which can lead to improvements which hopefully will have a positive effect on the learner experience and quality of learning.

Steven Verjans's insight:

Very thorough essay about the global trend to compare educational systems though standardised tests such as PISA. I agree with Jelmer that Sahlberg has the most nuanced view on this phenomenon.

Jelmer Evers's curator insight, December 16, 2012 10:54 AM

Very balanced article from Times Educational Supplement. Sahlberg, Barber, Schleiger and others weigh in on the positive and negative sides of international rankings. I think Barber's view is definitely contaminated. He's working for Pearson. Schleiger has to much confidence in the data. That always seems to be the blind spot of statisticians. Sahlberg as always has the most nuances view. We would do well to heed his message in the Netherlands.

Without changing the model of pedagogy, the physical campus will not survive
Steven Verjans's insight:

When xMOOCs become the hot topic at the Davos talks, then should we start to worry about the future of higher education? In my view, the pedagogical model of the xMOOC is rather traditional, no? An expert explains some knowledge online, and students are passive listeners. Where's the pedagogy in that?

Curating vs. Collecting on Twitter for the Education Professional

Curating vs. Collecting on Twitter for the Education Professional | Hoger Onderwijs 3.0 | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good
Steven Verjans's insight:

Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has an interesting and highly visual post on collecting vs. curating with Twitter, and on the curation potential Twitter has in store for those involved in education.

She quotes Mike Fisher writing: "Collecting is what kids do when asked to find resources for a particular topic. Usually, it represents the first 3 or 4 hits on a Google search, without meaning, discernment, or connections.

Curating is different. It’s the Critical Thinker’s collection, and involves several nuances (see Figure 1) that separate it as an independent and classroom-worthy task."

Useful. Resourceful. 7/10

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robin's curated posts hits it on the nail with the distinct differences and although I like the visual aspects of the post, I struggle with referring to Twitter as a curating tool.
It is certainly a critical tool for collecting, researching and having the conversations. I think there is a challenge on how to effectively curate with Twitter. I know many use Storify to do this which is often a re- representationof the tweets.
 I am very interested in how Twitter will use Summnify aand Posterous in the field of curation.
As a result, I really likw the distinctions made and the logic the author takes us through. I would  perhaps be a little more cautious with referring  Twitter as a curation tool.
Useful 6/10
