wherein the light gate (7) is arranged at least in part in a beam path of the coupled-out light (8) of the associated diffraction grating (3).

wherein the light gate (7) is set up to control the transmission of light depending on an applied control signal,
wherein the controllable transmission preferably comprises at least two different transmission values.

wherein the transmission values comprise a first and a second value, where the image (6) is visible at the first transmission value and where the image (6) is not visible at the second transmission value.

wherein the light gate (7) comprises a first polarization filter (9) and a second polarization filter (10) and a controllable polarization modulator (11) arranged between the polarization filters (9, 10).

wherein the first polarization filter (9), the second polarization filter (10) and the controllable polarization modulator (11) are arranged in a beam path of the coupled-out light (8) of the associated diffraction grating (3).

wherein the light gate (7) is applied at least in parts to the coupling-out surface (14).

wherein a low-refractive-index layer (15) is included on the coupling-out surface (14) at least between the holographic diffraction grating (3) and the parts of the light gate (7).

Exploiting the interplay between gain, loss and the coupling strength between different optical components creates a variety of new opportunities in photonics to generate, control and transmit light. Inspired by the discovery of real eigenfrequencies for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians obeying parity–time (PT) symmetry, many counterintuitive aspects are being explored, particularly close to the associated degeneracies also known as ‘exceptional points’. This Review explains the underlying physical principles and discusses the progress in the experimental investigation of PT-symmetric photonic systems. We highlight the role of PT symmetry and non-Hermitian dynamics for synthesizing and controlling the flow of light in optical structures and provide a roadmap for future studies and potential applications. This Review discusses recent developments in the area of non-Hermitian physics, and more specifically the special case of non-Hermitian optical systems with parity–time symmetry.

The power consumption of emissive micro-LED displays generally varies with image content, such that dim or sparse content requires less power to display. Since AR and MR environments may often be sparse — since it may generally be desirable for the user to be able to see their surrounding environment — emissive micro-LED displays may have an average power consumption below that of other display technologies that use an SLM to modulate light from a light source. Each family now generates a lower resolution virtual image, but said virtual images generated by the different families are interlaced to recover a high resolution.
These configurations combine the compactness of short focal devices with high image resolution.
However, these configurations don't make a full use of the panel because some panel pixels (also called object pixels) need to be turned off to avoid crosstalk between channels and consequently cannot be used to send images to the eye. This crosstalk occurs because each channel is designed to create on the eye retina a partial virtual image from the light coming from a particular set of object pixels (called cluster), and so, the light coming from pixels not belonging to its cluster and processed by the channel may create unwanted overlapped images. This is particularly dangerous for the pixels that are physically close to the cluster. Light from pixels far from the cluster may illuminate the channel, but the channel redirects it far from the eye pupil so that light does not get into the eye and does not creates crosstalk, in general.
A step further to make full use of the panel is disclosed herein.
This step consist of confining the emission of the panel pixels so the light emanating from them does not illuminate channels close to the right one. This eliminates the need of turning off some object pixels, allowing for a full use of the panel. This strategy not only improves the effective use of all panel pixels but also reduces the power consumed by reducing the light emitted outside the eye pupil.
Additionally, as disclosed herein, this strategy allows also color images without the use of absorbing filters, improving energy efficiency and cost a bit further. Optionally, color sequential can be used (which leads to improvements in virtual image resolution) if the panel switching speed.

EnvironmentAn image processing system can provide a virtual reality (VR) experience to a user wearing a head-mounted display (HMD) and can enable the user to interact with one or more objects in a real-world environment. In one example, the image processing system receives image data (e.g., one or more still frame images and/or video frame images, etc.) of a scene. In some cases, receiving data can include capturing, detecting, acquiring, and/or obtaining data. The scene can be associated with a real-world environment around the user wearing the HMD. The real-world environment can include a real-world object that is captured in the scene. In other words, received image data representing the scene can include image data that represents the real-world object. The real-world object in the captured scene (i.e., in the received image data of the scene) is referred to as a target object. In this example, the user wearing the HMD and experiencing a virtual environment may desire or intend to interact with the target object while continuing to experience the virtual environment while wearing the HMD. The image processing system can detect or identify the target object in the captured scene. After identifying the target object in the captured image, the image processing system can include the target object within the virtual environment that the user is experiencing via the HMD. Slanted surface relief gratings for use in an optical display system in an HMD device are replicated in a manufacturing process that utilizes non-contact optical proximity recording into a specialized photo-sensitive resin that is disposed over a waveguide substrate. The recording process comprises selective resin exposure to ultraviolet light through a mask to spatially record grating structures by interferential exposure and polymerization. Subsequent resin development evacuates unexposed resin down to the waveguide substrate to remove flat surfaces, referred to as a bias layer, that remain in the grating trenches after exposure. The resin development reduces Fresnel reflections that could otherwise be induced at the media interface between the bias layer and the waveguide substrate. Fresnel reflections may cause a loss of diffraction efficiency and thereby reduce the field of view that may be guided by the SRGs in the optical display system.

In virtual environments such as, for example, the metaverse, users can represent themselves as avatars. A user may use head-mounted displays (HMDs) as portals to the virtual environment. HMDs include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and/or mixed reality (MR) devices including headsets, goggles, glasses, etc. With HMDs, the location of the eyes of the user wearing the HMD relative to cameras and other sensors in the HMD is predictable. Thus, the user's avatar appears naturally oriented in the virtual environment.
