Hip-hop study yields crucial insights in other fields | Harvard Crimson | Herstory | Scoop.it

“I’m looking at whether Nicki Minaj’s hyper-sexuality through her body and her appearance promotes rigid gender types, and then whether that enforces ideas of homophobia within hip-hop,” Mcginty says. She is also examining Minaj’s gay male alter ego, Roman Zolanski, and whether her performance of a man plays into her hyper-sexuality or complicates it.

Hip Hop Archive at Harvard University.

The below quote is an excerpt from the article in which I find really interesting, "...........This Afro-Brazilian community was also a big consumer of African-American styles of music. They could not understand exactly what African-Americans were saying due to the language barrier, but because of the civil rights imagery on the covers of vinyl records, they understood what these musicians were talking about."

Interesting perspectivies on how Hip Hop influences other genres.  Good read.

Purpose Driven Lies and Gender Equality

Blog by TINA DUPUY, Taking Eternal Vigilance Too Far

This idea of lying to women has been in the quiver of the our-choice-for-you movement since before Roe v. Wade when abortion was legal only at the state level. In 1967, the first of what are now known as crisis pregnancy centers or fake abortion clinics was opened by a man named Robert Pearson in Hawaii. The blueprint for these ruses is still The Pearson Foundation’s manual, “How to Start and Operate Your Own Pro-Life Outreach Crisis Pregnancy Center,” published in 1984. Pearson writes, “Obviously, we’re fighting Satan. A killer, who in this case is the girl who wants to kill her baby, has no right to information that will help her kill her baby.” [MORE]

Immoral Women: Why We Need More of Them | Border House

Immoral Women: Why We Need More of Them | Border House | Herstory | Scoop.it
The reality of the situation is that the portrayal of women as pure, stainless alabaster icons of virtue is a huge problem that arises from cultural stereotypes of women. The notion that women are inherently more virtuous, kinder, and so on is part of the limiting and fetishising pedestalisation that serves to fence us off from being thought of as persons. Human beings are flawed characters with failings and weaknesses; angels are not.

It was just a few slaps. That’s OK then?

Heard today, the actor who admitted to slapping his ex-wife. "I couldn't handle the fact she was a strong woman," he said.

The ex-wife said she wasn't a beaten wife, just a few slaps because she was difficult to live with. Hello?

No-one should have the right to hit another person, or animal. That's just wrong.

She's not in a situation where she fears for her life, she got out, or he got out, don't know that detail. Yet, she still somehow feels partly to blame. It takes courage to stand up, go the whole way.
