One woman’s movement to strip beauty standards and reclaim her face

One woman’s movement to strip beauty standards and reclaim her face | Herstory | Scoop.it

This March, I’m challenging myself to an entire month without makeup.

People wear makeup for various reasons. Some wear it to emphasize their ethnic identity, some to accentuate their gender identity. Others use makeup as an empowering survival tool in an oppressed culture, while others consider their makeup to be an ongoing art piece in self-expression. Some reasons are positive, but my reason for wearing makeup was not. I wanted to be perfect.

Sexual Objectification: What It Is, Why It's Damaging, And How We Change It

Sexual Objectification: What It Is, Why It's Damaging, And How We Change It | Herstory | Scoop.it
Sexual objectification is not only deeply (and bizarrely) rooted in our cultural subconscious, but it's also something that has to change if we want a truly happy, sex-healthy society.

It's very hard for men to see women as people versus sexual objects. They have been trained by media/ TV, their peers, their family and etc for all the years of their lives.

When Beauty Is A Crime

When Beauty Is A Crime | Herstory | Scoop.it

I have a modest collection of vintage vanity items. (My collection and I have even been featured in Collectors News magazine.) And indeed, I’ve often wondered about the vast popularity of Rachel as a powder shade. I’d rather believed the hype that this particular shade was named after a popular actress at the time — but in Antique Personal Possessions, Silvia Druitt gives another possible reason...

What's Wrong with This Picture? Why Maria Kang Can't Tell People What to Do. - BlogHer (blog) | Herstory | Scoop.it

How can you tell women that if they just put down the pound cake and took up your prayer and exercise regime they would look like that, when you don't even look like that? I am...disappoint. And none of this is to say her photo here isn't gorgeous. The only one saying that is her, when she thanks her fans for being "understanding and supportive" of her stomach skin. She is a damn knockout, as she is. I'm sorry she doesn't see it that way.

Woman in Bikini Kicked Out of Water Park for Full Figure | Herstory | Scoop.it

Madelyn is convinced that her age and her fuller figure are why she was asked to cover up. She says, "Just the fact that there were other girls wearing string bikinis – 15, 16, 18 years old – beautiful young bodies, and they are not being told to cover up. I mean, do I have to be 16 and look 100 percent perfect to wear a bikini? Or can I be comfortable in my own skin. Am I allowed to have a matured body?"

Wow! Something that seems so obvious to us women, and yet took this sensitive, insightful, intelligent man 40 odd years to realise. And it's not like he's god's gift as a man either - you'd have thought it might have occurred to him before. I don't know whether to feel despair or elation at this.

Women are often worried about how they look and that's not superficial. We know that our appearance has nothing to do with how smart, creative, or hardworking we are, but it plays powerfully into what society decides we are worth.

Why Do So Many Pretty Female Comedians Pretend They're Ugly?

Why Do So Many Pretty Female Comedians Pretend They're Ugly? | Herstory | Scoop.it
Phyllis Diller was among the first to show us all that women could, indeed, be funny--but they'd have to give up their looks, smarts, and accomplishments first.
Laura Brown's comment, August 26, 2012 10:29 AM
I never thought Phyllis Diller was ugly. She just seemed really unique and liked being her own person. I guess I never judged her in the way I considered her ugly. She was one of the women I admired.

But, I would guess female comedians would put less emphasis on their looks so that others would do the same. If a woman wants to be listened to, heard, she can't have people admiring her great rack, her sexy butt, etc. Men especially, can only work with one brain at a time.
