Recently I was asked to implement user-friendly Excel exports on a WAN-based solution, utilizing some of the techniques explored earlier in this series (part 1, part 1.1, part 2, part 3, part 4 and part 5 — all from five years ago). There was just one problem: while performance was great locally, and okay on a LAN, it was…
Generator can help you connect your FileMaker Custom App to the web. It takes care of the tedious repetitive and error-prone tasks of creating web requests and parsing JSON by hand.
In recent years, design, has become such an important aspect of what we do; luckily FileMaker has responded with a much improved design surface. With themes and styles, conditional visibility, SVG icon support, and new layout objects, we can now use design and color to communicate with users in ways not previously possible (see, for example, the “Priorities” example in the accompanying demo file).
In Part 1 (“Check Please,”) and Part 2 (“Expert Panel,”) of this series, we had some fun doing things with button bars that showed off some of their unique usefulness within the FileMaker design-layer toolbox. Often as not, your button bars are going to include icon labels, with or without a supporting text label, and you want those icons to look great.
Search is an integral part of any solution, and can take many forms. FileMaker provides us with a useful native find mode, along with quickfind. Often though this is unintuitive for users, or just does not fit in with the design of a solution. In this article we present a slick, great looking search box UI design pattern, and explain how it is built. We also incorporate a number of native FileMaker techniques to achieve this (no plugins here!).
What good is an article like this without a demo file to accompany it right? Well here it is! No username and password, fully unlocked just go for it.
When I first started teaching FileMaker scripting, I went through the entire list of script steps and provided a simple example of each one. By the end of the third day, we had covered every script step but with no depth. More questions remained than were answered. That’s when I decided to focus on the most important steps. Instead of spending valuable time teaching scripts steps most people would never use in real life scenarios, I decided to concentrate on steps that are used over and over and have tons of depth. That’s how I developed my "Ultimate Find" script. It’s a great way to start your journey into advanced scripting, demonstrating important concepts and sophisticated techniques with key script steps, all in one little script. Besides, every good solution needs a well designed find script.
In the last few years, I've subscribed to the KISS methodology (Keep It Simple Stupid). Call it wisdom or humility, I'm not sure which. All I know is, after over two decades in the FileMaker market, I've discovered the simplest solution is most often best for my clients. It costs less and performs better, in most cases. I know all the tricks, having practically wrote the book on the subject, but there is a time and a place for complex methods. What I'm here to convince you is, choose complicated techniques carefully.
C is for container Container is a field type. When you build a database, most of your fields will likely be text fields. Other standard data field types are number, date, time and timestamp. Although each of these have subtleties in how they store and present data, they are fairly obvious in their usage. Why … Continue reading "The A–Z of FileMaker: C"
Fortunately, there are a number of rapid application software platforms that can be used to affordably create custom inventory solutions.
One of those tools is the FileMaker Platform. The software has been around since the early 80’s, having been owned by both Microsoft and Apple (at different times, of course). The FileMaker platform runs on Windows, Mac, iOS (iPhone, iPod, and iPad) as well as the web. It is currently a subsidiary of Apple.
This site is a collection of articles on building Inventory Management Systems (IMS) with the FileMaker Platform. It is written specifically for two primary groups:
Citizen developers (e.g. business owner, operations manager, IT director, etc.) who want to use FileMaker’s ease of use and rapid development environment to create their own IMS. FileMaker Pro developers who haven’t yet built an IMS.
Hi guys, Recently been playing with video editing software, thought I will take this chance to make some simple 5-10 minutes FileMaker beginner tutorial
Have you ever had a FileMaker design conundrum for which you wished you could convene an Expert Panel to help guide you? If you’re thinking "panel of experts," I can’t help you, but if you’re looking for a more flexible and visually engaging alternative to FileMaker Tab Panels, this combination of a slide-panel control and a button bar just might be your "Expert Panel."

Author's note: I'd like to offer a big thank you to Christian Schmitz of Monkeybread Software, not only for creating and continually improving a fantastic plug-in, but also for promptly and patiently answering my many questions. A few weeks ago we looked at creating a table of contents for a PDF containing nine individual reports.…
Script Triggers are one of the most fascinating features in FileMaker. Triggers augment existing features like auto-enter and validation as well as introduce completely new functionality not available through button driven scripting alone. The ability to define a script to execute based on a defined event fills so many gaps, their power can never be underestimated. There is no doubt amazing features can be created using Script Triggers. With the power of FileMaker scripting firing behind the scenes based on events, often in combination with the calculation engine, a whole new world of programming flexibility not possible with single purpose features alone is open. The abuse of this power of Script Triggers is my concern.
