Cloud computing has become a lot like the Hotel California: Once you pick a provider you can check out anytime you want – but you can never leave. You’ve no doubt heard of “cloud lock-in,” the concept that once you architect and optimize your systems on a single infrastructure seller you’re effectively stuck with the choice. It’s an unattractive idea, especially in an industry moving as quickly as cloud computing is.

In travel industry, the one question that can never be certainly answered is - Who eats who? By 'eat', we mean the marketshare. We will keep things simple and say that - In the year 2000, Online Travel Agencies (OTA) took a major marketshare from offline Travel Agents, and now (post 2010) Airline websites are posing a serious threat in taking over marketshare from OTAs. This is seemingly becoming evident in the last couple of years.

A sizeable study of leisure trippers in 13 countries around has shed further light on how important social media in two important areas of the travel funnel. The influence of social media is strong at the points where inspiration for a trip is being sought and at the point where consumers are busily sharing their experiences, but not at the point where money changes – ie. purchasing a flight, hotel, car hire, activity, etc. The study spoke to 4,600 travellers Australia, China, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, UK and US who had taken at least one leisure trip in the past 12 months or planned to over the course of the next year. Until now, a key quality differentiating the traditional travel agent and the online travel agency (OTA) has been high-touch personalization. Traditional agents have it. OTAs not so much. But a new generation of travel software is about to change that equation. OTAs are beginning to move from the “rational” booking tools on which they were built — those two-dimensional grids of dates, city pairs and fares — to “inspirational” tools that open with maps of the world and evocative images, trip themes and interactive features designed to appeal to the emotions and create a highly personalized purchasing experience.

Will you have a "digital wallet" in your future? Will it become a vital interface between you and practically everyone you deal with while traveling? Lots of folks are betting yes. Broadly, the idea is to exchange old-fashioned paper and plastic for a master digital wireless system that can be used for all the transactions you now perform using the contents of your wallet or purse.
