Is there healing value in listening to the heartache and suffering of others? This requires the listener to be very present in that moment and to block out everything and totally engage in this process.
To listen properly, there should be no distractions. You must pay close attention to what is being said. Advise may or may not be what the person is desiring. Sometimes they are only wanting someone to listen intently.
Women seem more likely to open up about their problems than men do. Men sometimes regard emotional pain as a sign of weakness or not being “man enough” to suffer in silence.
You know when you get a glimpse into someone else’s emotional experience or their pain? You can really feel it for a moment and sometimes it might bring you to tears or motivate you to help someone. That’s empathy.
Overactive empathy, on the other hand, is when you have that experience of opening up to someone else’s emotions and experience, but then instead of coming back to yourself afterwards and being centered in your own needs and feelings, you remain ‘out there’ – absorbed in everyone else’s ‘stuff’. In social situations, you can sense what everyone else is feeling and thinking.
Even walking past people in the street, you can feel and sense what is going on with them. Physical empaths can even pick up physical pains and aches that aren’t theirs.

Overactive empathy can lead to people-pleasing, self-sacrifice and self neglect
Empaths—extremely empathic people—make wonderful teachers, healers, therapists, and partners.
Being an empath, however, can be hazardous to your health: Empaths absorb others’ emotions, get sick more easily, and are more vulnerable to emotional contagion than people who are not empaths.

Once you have clarified that you are indeed an empath, then you have accepted that you are a little “different”.
Here is a link to previous post to see if you are an empath. There are different rules that you should abide by to prevent yourself from harm and to learn how to harness your gifts towards your higher purpose. Chances are if you are not an empath then you have a friend or family member that is.
As empaths get older and wiser they tend to gravitate towards one another
so it is not uncommon to eventually surround yourself with several like-minded people.
• Are your coworkers, friends, and family members like psychic vampires who siphon your energy and leave you feeling drained?
• Feeling angry, depressed, or sick most of the time? You may be an empath picking up on the detrimental thoughts, emotions, and attitudes of others. Whose Stuff Is This? Finding Freedom from the Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You is for those who carry energetic burdens that belong to someone else. More than two dozen proven and effective ways to clear your energy field, this guide employs empowering, proactive techniques to manage your own energy. With a chapter on the psychology of empathy by Dr. Caron Goode, this book presents the personal story of how the author learned to psychically protect herself.
THE EMPATH is a recurring character in Star Trek, usually a woman, who has the ability to read the emotions of others, sometimes at great distance. Empath Deanna Troi, for example, is seen as having the seemingly futuristic and alien talent to feel what others feel.
By ALBERT NERENBERG,
What is truly sci-fi is that almost all humans possess this apparently fantastical ability. Empathy is a true human superpower. Most of us are empaths. Most of us feel for strangers, can read other people's emotions and can feel other people's pain.
The term empath is used to describe someone who experiences the emotions of others as their own. But is there a basis in reality for the empath experience?
The empath experience is a term used to describe a process by which a person feels the emotions of someone else as their own. Initially born in fiction novels and movies, this concept has gained momentum as potentially having a basis in reality, mostly through self-reports on internet web sites dedicated to empaths. A discussion is presented on the potential biological processes that could be involved in the empath experience, such as mirror neurons. We also discuss the relationship between the psychological concept of empathy and the empath experience as well as the major challenges faced by empaths, such as mental illness, lack of widespread information and a fear of being ridiculed upon disclosure of their experience. Finally, an in-depth exploration of the deeper purpose behind the emergence of this ability strengthens the possibility that the empath experience has transcended fiction to become part of our everyday life.
Empath means that a person has a lifelong gift for directly experiencing what it is like to be another person. Empath gifts include physical oneness, physical intuition, intellectual empath ability (called “intellectual shape shifting” in the first book in English for empaths, “Empowered by Empathy”).
For a full list of possible empath gifts, plus what to do if you have any of them, you can learn from that book. Or you could learn, probably more quickly and easily, from the sequel I wrote after a decade of teaching Empath Empowerment(R), “Become The Most Important Person in the Room.”
As sensitives, we tend to be good listeners. We find it easy to tune in to others, notice subtle cues and give our undivided attention to what someone is saying. Thich Nath Hanh once said that if only more people would truly listen to others, there wouldn’t be such a great need for therapists.
1. Knowing: Empaths just know stuff, without being told. It’s a knowing that goes way beyond intuition or gut feelings, even though that is how many would describe the knowing. The more attuned they are the stronger this gift becomes.
2. Being in public places can be overwhelming: Places like shopping malls, supermarkets or stadiums, where there are lots of people around, can fill the Empath with turbulently vexed emotions that are coming from others.
3. Feeling others emotions and taking them on as your own: This is a huge one for Empaths. To some, they will feel emotions off those near by and with others they will feel emotions from those a vast distance away, or both. The more adept Empath will know if someone is having bad thoughts about them, even from a great distance.
Welcome. I'm Elaine Aron, author of The Highly Sensitive Person and The Highly Sensitive Child, as well as The Highly Sensitive Person Workbook and The Highly Sensitive Person in Love, a book about how sensitivity affects our close relationships. I began researching high sensitivity in 1991 and continue to do research on it now, also calling it Sensory-Processing Sensitivity (SPS, the trait's scientific term). I never planned to write any self-help books, but those who have this trait seem to gain a great deal from knowing about it.
magine being able to feel and sense everything, whether positive or negative around you, 24/7. An Empath can’t turn off empathy (unlike someone who is perhaps ‘empathising’). It is possibly one of the most challenging of psychic gifts to master. I am an Empath who has spent nearly two decades, since awakening, mastering my empathic nature. It is an ongoing process. I am still not perfect and not sure that I ever will be whilst incarnated here. I am however content, despite the challenges of integration, as I see it as an incredible gift to humanity..
Empaths incarnate into this world without a manual.
I was born, raised and trained as an empath. When I tell people this they usually react the same way “Prove it.” I hate that.
I usually want to respond with “Well then, I can tell you are a skeptical person that believes in nothing unless shown Scientific “proof”. What ever happened to trusting your “gut feeling“?
For me, that gut feeling is called Empathy and its a pain in the ass. I hate having to educate people on something they already believe is not true or real. Its about the same as me turning to you and saying “Wind isn’t real unless you can show it to me.”
Being an empath is when you are affected by other people’s energies, and have an innate ability to intuitively feel and perceive others. Your life is unconsciously influenced by others’ desires, wishes, thoughts, and moods. Being an empath is much more than being highly sensitive and it’s not just limited to emotions.
Empaths can perceive physical sensitivities and spiritual urges, as well as just knowing the motivations and intentions of other people. You either are an empath or you aren’t. It’s not a trait that is learned.
Mass Empathy, particularly now, could be tossing you into the undiscerning maw of the masses and may leave you at the mercy of someone else’s ideals.
This could be by people or organizations devoid of knowing your own unique emotional state and feeling – without you even knowing it, and these masses may have no intention of keeping you safe. They simply data mine your states of emotion and market them. I study propaganda and emotional states for my work and I have experienced this, so this is a cautionary tale of discernment I would advise you to continue on with.
As a psychic empath, the most vital tool is still in trying to be selective in understanding ideas, mass media, ideologies and t he emotions that drive them.
Empathic illnesses are those in which you manifest symptoms that are not your own.
Many patients have come to me labeled “agoraphobic” with panic disorders, chronic depression, fatigue, pain, or mysterious ailments that respond only partially to medications or psychotherapy.

Empathic ability allows you to read and understand people’s energy. This ability may be genetic, passing from generation to generation. You may share this ability with a relative, so look at your family tree; does anyone else seem to fit the description? Empaths have the ability to scan another’s energy for thoughts, feelings and possibly for past, present, and future life occurrences. Most empaths are unaware of how this really works, and have accepted that they are sensitive to other people’s energy. The ability to correctly perceive and to some extent mirror the energy of another is a challenge. This gift allows us to steer ourselves through life with added perception. You need to be selective and have coping skills in place, if not you will easily be overwhelmed.
1. Imagine a friend is sitting across from you and your friend is feeling fine. You sense she is in a good space. 2. Imagine touching the person with just one finger and listening and feeling for what your one finger is telling you about the friend. Notice that we are only using one finger, a very light touch. Using just one finger is protective and may be all you need to do to get enough information. 3. Imagine you want to know more and experience greater empathy, yet you don’t want to pick up too much. Imagine using two fingers (just two) to touch the person. Notice if you get a little more informatio 4. If you want still more information, imagine placing your hand on your friend’s shoulder and feeling her state. This is still using your empathy as a psychic ability. Many of us are naturally empathic. We are great friends and listeners. Learn how to protect and ground your energy so you don’t pick up too much.
Psychologist Elaine Aron writes in her book The Highly Sensitive Person that about 15 to 20 percent of the population is characterized as highly sensitive (HS). She adds that about 30 percept of people are moderately sensitive, while 50 percent of people think of themselves as being sensitive while they are "not at all sensitive."
What being highly sensitive is NOT: 1. Emotionally immature 2. Self-centered 3. Unpredictable and unstable emotions 4. Over-dependent 5. Demanding and attention thirsty
People who are highly empathic to their own and others feelings often feel overwhelmed by a world that does not support their values and sensitivities. It's time for Empaths to take Cultural Leadership & Power and to build a Culture of Empathy.

I am an Empath. Now for those of you who do not know, an Empath is one who feels what others feel around them; we have the innate ability to tune into and read people's emotions and feelings, however seldom at will. Throughout my time on this site and looking through various posts and stories about Empathy and Empaths, one of the biggest, if not the biggest, questions is "how do I control my ability?" Plain and simple in a nutshell, you can't. Now I know that's a very blunt, conclusive response, but it's true and it's to the point as far as control goes with Empathy. But if you really, really, desperately seek something that reaches as close to "control" over Empathy as is possible, then you've come to the right post:
