THERE are several problems with the growing chorus championing online education (The Australian, June 6). The argument is that since recent information and communication technologies are clearly disruptive technologies, higher education is failing by not (yet) adopting them.

 

Proselytisers assert that universities are shortchanging their students and underserving society, and that most current institutions risk being superseded by new institutions or processes that will make them anachronistic if not redundant.

 

The more apocalyptic claims are that universities will soon be as obsolete as newspapers are becoming.

 

Many of the online evangelists are politicians, technophiles or businesspeople. Few are educationalists or people with much experience of distance education. Of course, the critics claim that current institutions and their staff are trapped in their traditional ways and either cannot see or resist the imperative to change.

Oxford University was founded in 1096, Cambridge in 1209. Harvard, a relative newcomer, was founded in 1636. Other than religions, few institutions appear to have maintained their existence or their relative status for as long as major universities. And few institutions, notably again other than religions, have seen so little change. Oxford in 2012 teaches students in ways remarkably similar to Oxford in 1096, seated students listening to professors in a classroom.

 

I suspect that these two facts are related; stasis in methods has led to stasis in status. And I suspect that both of these facts are about to change. Online education will change how universities teach; as a result, online education will change which universities teach.

 

Advantages of Online Education

I see three principle advantages to online education,

1) leverage, especially of the best teachers;

2) time savings;

3) individualized teaching and new technologies.

Internet courses are monologues. True learning is a dialogue.

 

PM - An opinion piece from the NYT. Use of sexist language ("with his sensitivity..." - "he knows he’s doing something right. From there he folds what he has learned into his teaching, adjusting his course...") and a simple view of what 'is' online education shows how far parts of America are behind the 'real world' and how much further we have to go to get people to see that online education can be so much more. The writer has obviously not had a positive experience with online learning, perhaps they should try some online courses from other institutions as the interaction they describe is certainly possible in an online environment.

Can high-quality online learning really compete with classroom instruction at the college level? And if it can, what does that mean for students and educators?

 

On May 22, Ithaka S&R released "Interactive Learning Online at Public Universities: Evidence from Randomized Trials," a study that helps validate the efficacy of online learning at the college level and points to some of its potential benefits.

The full report is worth a look, but here are the basics: 605 students at six public universities were randomly assigned to take an introductory statistics course in either a traditional format or a hybrid format. The hybrid format combined machine-guided instruction--what the researchers refer to as ILO, or "Interactive Learning Online"--along with one hour of face-to-face instruction each week.
