n Fall 2011, Stanford announced three, free massively open online courses, or MOOCs. Two of these courses, database and machine learning, corresponded to spring 2012 courses that I would be teaching at Vanderbilt University. I recognized that I could use the lecture materials from these classes to “flip” my own classes by having students view lectures before the class meeting, which then could be used for other learning activities.... http://www.scoop.it/t/easy-mooc

We are again talking about innovation in higher education and it is a refreshing change. The most conspicuous, challenging and controversial subject of these discussions is “MOOCs” – massive open online courses. MOOCs such as Coursera, Udacity and edX, all launched in early 2012, have received extensive media coverage accompanied by a lot of commentary. What type of education is offered here? Will it last? How do we judge its quality? Is there a role for accreditation?... http://www.scoop.it/t/easy-mooc

... Gilfus comments that: ‘Sustainability is not assured with the MOOC organizations until they can find an economic model that rewards all stakeholders. It might in fact be easier for existing LMS companies to pursue these models as the technology already exists on campus. Simply put companies like Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodlerooms and others are quickly devising strategies to develop high quality courses in addition to their current capabilities.‘... http://www.scoop.it/t/easy-mooc

As President Obama develops his second-term agenda, his administration will no doubt focus on a range of higher-education priorities, including affordability, attainment levels, and career preparation. Yet as important as these issues are, something more fundamental is happening: We’re witnessing the end of higher education as we know it. This transformation is being brought on by “MOOCs”... http://www.scoop.it/t/easy-mooc

... Degrees will remain the currency of higher education. The most recent evidence of this is the rapid progress MOOCs are making to conform to the degree economy. Antioch recently announced that it would license Coursera MOOCs to provide its students with a lower-cost path to a bachelor’s degree. And this week Coursera announced that the American Council on Education... http://www.scoop.it/t/easy-mooc

Ten thousand students have just taken the final exam in MITx's course "6.002x Circuits and Electronics." The sheer size of this course (120,000 first registered back in March), the high-wattage backing of MIT for a certificate of completion to all those who make it through to the end, and the free, open access nature of this MOOC (a "massive open online course") seemingly ushers in a fundamentally new paradigm in higher education... http://www.scoop.it/t/easy-mooc
