The 7–10 curriculum generally takes a world history approach within which the history of Australia is taught. It does this to equip students for the world (local, regional and global) in which they live. An understanding of world history enhances students’ appreciation of Australian history. It enables them to develop an understanding of the past and present experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, their identities and the continuing value of their cultures. It also helps students to appreciate Australia’s distinctive path of social, economic and political development, its position in the Asia and Pacific regions, and its global interrelationships. This knowledge and understanding is essential for informed and active participation in Australia’s diverse society and in creating rewarding personal and collective futures.

The three units of work included in this resource were designed to support teachers and students working with the Australian Curriculum: History. While the primary aim has been to complement topics studied at the Year 9 level and target relevant achievement standards, it is also hoped that the units may have a wider application in modelling a number of things: The importance of embedding any historical inquiry in a learning sequence that supports students in developing the knowledge, understanding and skills to build towards meeting the challenges of a meaningful final assessment task. The need to carefully select source material and scaffold activities if students are to have a productive experience with sources. The importance of directing students towards accessible sources that will engage and reward historical inquiry.

"create share explore" "learn best by doing" I think this takes ICT in history from the SA, to the MR. (world-wide) REsearching, networking, visualising, creating. This sort of resource makes history modern (!?)

An Interesting Dilemma...We want students to do “group work,” to collaborate, and to discuss. However, we have very specific realms in which we want this to happen: the group assignment, the in-class discussion, studying for exams, etc. At the same time, many of us want to put up barriers and halt any collaboration at other times (during assessments, for example). What strategies/research skills are you teaching to avoid collaboration/sharing ideas becoming plagiarism?

Teaching History with 100 objects: http://www.teachinghistory100.org/. The British Museum has partnered up with other UK museums, supported by the Department for Education, to provide online histories of 100 key objects in British collections that connect with all areas of the new history curriculum and with hundreds of linked objects that explore world history from 500,000 years ago to the present day.

What a great collection...'From Schindler’s List to Free State of Jones, Hollywood has pushed out some impressive historical dramas over the years. However, being brutally accurate, these films are not appropriate for kids. A follow up to Historical Movies for Kids, here are some great historical movies for junior high and high school. Most are under the R rating (there’s a few exceptions, that are always noted as R), and none have graphic sexual content or an obsessive amount of profanity. Additionally, all are engaging and handle violence realistically without being gory. To further establish fact from fiction, check out History vs. Hollywood and Teach With Movies. (Read why I believe a fictional movie or “based on a true story” movie can be beneficial for learning history.)'

Incredible images would make a fabulous Past/Present activity for students. Cheryl Ward and Bernard de Broglio made this haunting collection of pictures by seamlessly combining contemporary images with eyewitness photographs taken on Lemnos in 1915.

On one level he is able to present the pupils with a task and draw out the salient historical facts through his questioning feedback, ensuring the pupils ‘get it’. He feels confident in his ability to do this, and yet his mentor and university tutor…

The purpose is everything...'Crafting the questioning ultimately doesn’t mean planning out every single question, rather it means being clear about the purpose of the lesson and how the questioning will move the pupils in the direction of that purpose. The clarity of the enquiry question and historical rationale for the lesson is critical in achieving this and elevating questions beyond recall of facts.'

AC History Units presents 8 units developed by the History Teachers' Association of Australia to support teachers in the implementation of the Australian Curriculum: History ...A major goal has been to provide the conceptual background (in Unit 1) and concrete examples (in Units 2-8) to assist teachers in designing their own programs and learning sequences for other topics and year levels.

Major Thomas Anderson Kidd served with the 10th Light Horse in Gallipoli and Egypt, was wounded and became seriously ill with Cholera.
He wrote diaries which he embellished with maps and diagrams. He was Mentioned in Despatches for gallantry in May & August 1915 and he suggested Hugo Throssell get the Victoria Cross at Hill 60.
I edited a transcript of Tom’s re-written diary and began to understand his frustration with the foolishness of some orders and the impossibility of many aspects of the campaigns that he was involved in.
In my extensive reading I have found these words have been used to describe him; cool, calm, fair, caring, splendid, brave, fearless, reckless, bullet proof & the men even considered him bomb proof!
These men and their families obviously had a life both before & after their war service and I am interested in all facets; particularly the affect war had on them.
My book "Uncle Tom's Diary" is a young adult novella about the discovery of one of his diaries ... and secrets!

The Significance of the ANZAC tradition for all Australians...

Sourced from @SmythCatherine 's insight but such relevant comments about WHY? we commemorate ANZAC... Why is ANZAC DAY a significant event in Australia? How do we assign significance to an event or a person? Geoffery Partington suggests the following criteria can be used to determine significance: 1. Importance – to people living at the time 2. Profundity – how deeply people’s lives were affected by it 3. Quantity – how many lives were affected 4. Durability – for how long people’s lives were affected 5. Relevance – the extent to which the event has contributed to an increased understanding of present life Another way to think about the significance of something is to use Christine Counsell's model and ask whether the event or person was: 1. Remarkable (event/circumstance/person was remarked upon at the time or after) 2. Remembered (event/circumstance/person was important at some stage in history within collective memory) 3. Resonant (people like to identify with it, reveal something about individuals or society) 4. Resulting in change (consequences for the future -turning point) 5. Revealing- (about some other aspect of the past) The Australian War Memorial website provides background information about this significant event.
