Thanks to EdSurge for providing a link to this informative presentation by Frank Catalano on trends in educational technology. In it, he outlines five trends that cross K-12 and higher education, and it's certainly hard to argue with any of them.

Platform Convergence and the Dawn of Trans-Media Channels - interesting how voice control on the interface stream appeared in late 90s, with a major reappearance in late 00s with Siri etc:?

Since January we have facilitated a handful of iBooks Author workshops with educators at regional technology events all over California, as well as the Computer Using Educators (CUE) conference in Palm Springs. These workshops have included teachers and administrators engaged in discussions about how to leverage Apple's new software in education. Based upon these experiences, we have identified seven reasons why you should consider adding iBooks Author to your knowledge base.

"20 years of computers as a publishing tool has not necessarily improved the standard of students’ writing skills. The key words in that last sentence are of course publishing and writing. For too long we have seen the computer purely as a publishing tool. For me, the computer is far more effective as a writing tool."

This video walks though the process of supervising a device within Apple Configurator. Supervision is a more locked-down approach for device setup and focuses a bit more on a shared iPad scenario where users do not have ownership of the device and having it in a known state for everyone is beneficial. Using Apple Configurator, you have the ability to apply a configuration to USB connected devices in a continuous manner, reducing the time required to set them up. The functionality of iPhone Configuration Utility is included in the application as well.

The concept of ‘social reading’ was not so clear to me when it was first discussed a few years back. I did understand what Jeremy LeBard (what an excellent surname he has) was getting at with ReadCloud, especially in a school context but wondered if it would catch on or not. Now, that I am reading books almost exclusively via my iPad, social reading is becoming more clearly a concept that will develop as more people start to engage with ebooks.

While the iPad was created as a consumer device, it is growing in popularity both in the enterprise sector and in schools. Bringing the iPad to a group of users raised a host of practical issues including how to configure all of the devices identically so they were uniform and appropriate for the setting.

Vineet Madan, McGraw Hill Education vice president of new ventures, believes the new iPad in concert with Apple’s textbook initiative will indirectly change the way students learn. It’s not the new iPad’s host of features that has Madan excited; however, instead he believes the iPad 2 $100 price drop allow more schools to purchase iPads for their students.
