The application of educational technology has created a new teaching and learning concept – Cybergogy. One of the central elements of cybergogy is the intent to combine fundamentals of both pedagogy and andragogy to arrive at a new approach to learning (Carrier & Moulds, 2003). Cybergogy focuses on helping adults and young people to learn by facilitating and technologically enabling learner-centered autonomous and collaborative learning in a virtual environment. At the core of cybergogy is awareness that strategies used for face-to-face learning may not be the same used in the virtual environment.

There are numerous sites that are now offering Tutorials and how-to guides for creating ebooks in iBook Author. As teachers are now comfortable with the idea of creating their own e-textbooks more and more people are looking for resources to learn how to build touch enabled books that take full advantage of the iPad capabilities. Inserting video and high resolution photographs is one thing but how about inserting 3D manipulatives and models that are touch sensitive. Here is a list of some of the resources online.

This ELI Brief describes a program at the Stanford University School of Medicine in which entering students received an iPad and PDF annotation software for use in their curriculum. Key goals of the initiative were to move towards a paperless model of content delivery; facilitate use of educational content and information in courses and labs; and explore the opportunities and challenges of standardizing mobile device use across the curriculum. Results indicated that although student adoption varied, a large proportion of students preferred the iPad to laptops and paper for taking notes and reviewing materials after class. Survey data from the program suggest that iPads are perceived as effective in clinical situations for accessing frequently-used library materials, organizing PDF documentation and readings, using apps for clinical calculators and quick reference, and patient education.

Reed College finds that the iPad excels under the same conditions in which the Amazon Kindle failed a year earlier.
Apple’s iPad received glowing marks for its performance in college classrooms from the eagerly anticipated Reed College evaluation, according to a new report shared with Fast Company. The iPad’s smooth interface kept up with the lighting-quick pace of college lectures, helping it to overcome the very same gauntlet that killed the Kindle’s hope of education dominance a year earlier. Most importantly, the report predicts an explosion of opportunity for both Apple software developers and tablet competitors.
