John Gougoulis's insight:

Absolutely the right focus and their are things schools can and should be doing; but where there is an education system, that system has the responsibility to create, maintain and nourish the conditions that optimise educational outcomes for all students.

Turning around schools: it can be done

Turning around schools: it can be done | education reform | Scoop.it
By examining two primary and two secondary schools, this report argues that Australia’s most troubled schools can turn around their performance to achieve remarkable results by following five steps.
John Gougoulis's insight:

Anyone who has taught in schools for a period of time would agree with the findings of this report that a good school for kids and teachers has outstanding leadership; a core of excellent teachers, spirit of collaboration and high morale; good systems for monitoring and supporting all kids; and a positive school climate with supportive, engaged parents and community. The superlatives I have just used are loaded but I reckon if you have the first one (outstanding leadership) with all that that means, the foundation for the rest to emerge and flourish is there.

The pros and cons of standards - TNS - The News on Sunday | education reform | Scoop.it
Standard-driven education reforms are tantamount to throwing the process of education into an iron frame devaluing any educational influences
John Gougoulis's insight:

Lets not conflate challenging yet realistic standards to focus a quality education, with mandated external examinations.

Nine-hour tests and lots of pressure: welcome to the Chinese school system | education reform | Scoop.it
Chinese schooling receives global praise – but not from China's parents or educators, who find things to admire in the UK system
John Gougoulis's insight:

Here's the irony-some parts of the west are looking to China because of their latest high international test results whilst China is looking to the west because it would like to engage their students in deeper and broader learning for life!

Can I successfully learn a language online?

Can I successfully learn a language online? | education reform | Scoop.it
Technology has changed the way people learn and access education, particularly languages. But can you successfully master a language only using online tools?
John Gougoulis's insight:

I suppose it depends what you mean by "successfully learning a language". I am currently using apps to learn and internalise some words and phrases for my trip to Europe later in the year-success will be measured by my level of comprehension and ability to communicate in the language.

Abigail Anaba: The conflict between tech and education in Nigeria (1) | education reform | Scoop.it
Tweetby Abigail Anaba For the past decade, I have been working in the education sector. Based on my experience, I have a few ideas on how to resolve the seeming conflict between technology and education in Nigeria. Even if I was into titles, I would not dream of calling myself an educationist, I am just […]

Don't disagree with some of the points made here but it does not need to be a conflict scenario but a fit for purpose one

The Conversation
Australia finally has its first digital technology curriculum which is mandatory for all Australian children from Foundation, the name replacing kindergarten, to Year 8.
John Gougoulis's insight:

Some good points raised...its all a balancing act about what is core to a subject and what are important skills and competencies applying across subjects. It is just as true for literacy and numeracy as it is for technology.

Critical pedagogy: schools must equip students to challenge the status quo

Critical pedagogy: schools must equip students to challenge the status quo | education reform | Scoop.it
Teachers should embrace a radical pedagogy and provoke students to demand equality for themselves and others, argues Tait Coles The pedagogy popularised by E.D.Hirsch, and recently promoted by the likes of Civitas, reduces teaching into nothing...
John Gougoulis's insight:

Look, elements of critical pedagogy are in my mind an important part of the repertoire of teaching and learning strategies and experiential opportunities for all students, but not to the exclusion of other pedagogies. Too often people frame debates about teaching approaches as one to the exclusion of all else. There is a place and a time for some direct instruction (for example) and there is some stuff that we can agree kids should know.

Former Australian PM calls for new approach to global rankings
John Gougoulis's insight:

Some caution about differentiating assessment, and implictly standards, based on socio-economic conditions. For those developing nations of course work needs to be done on a quality curriculum, quality teaching, infrastructure and resources - but is not the aim to ensure ultimately that all students receive a quality education benchmarked internationally?

32 Characteristics Of High-Performing Classrooms

Instructional design is the strategic creation of learning experiences through intentional planning, sequencing, and data-based revision of learning.

This process includes both the ways content is accessed, and the learning needs and objectives (and how they are determined) themselves.

This puts instructional strategies, literacy strategies, curriculum mapping, standards unpacking, assessment design, digital literacy, and a dozen other facets of education beneath its umbrella.

John Gougoulis's insight:

OK generally, some of them can be combined, and some have dependencies on school environment and broader policy beyond an individual classroom...
