Top adviser backs Pyne over emphasis on teacher quality but says Australia must do more to help disadvantaged students (Senior OECD education official weighs into Australia's debate over teacher quality, funding & equity:
John Gougoulis's insight:

Its not so much about more money but how and where the money is spent. The disadvantaged schools funding model in the 70s and 80s in Australia saw a lot of money going into "priority" schools that I worked in to help raise the social aspirations of students in low SES communities but not enough was done on students' literacy and numeracy development. Nor was there a commensurate focus on teacher training and development in these and other areas like critrical and creative thinking for example. Teachers want to do the best for their kids and its important that we spend money on helping them do that-and thats not a one size fits all model but one that meets the needs of particular teachers in their particular school contexts.

John Gougoulis's insight:

These are not new lessons but it does make one reflect on how important they are when considered together as a package deal:

- Teacher quality comes down to high standards (knowledge, skills, morals) for teacher entry, preparation and education.

- Each teacher is important, but the culture of the school and teachers as a team is even more important

- School leadership matters as much as teacher quality.

- Teachers and schools should have autonomy and authority to plan, teach and assess for their students.

- Teacher performance should not be judged by their student’s standardised test results.

- Up to two-thirds of what explains student achievement is beyond the control of schools so need to “elevate children out of poverty by other public policies”.

John Gougoulis's insight:

I like this because it puts personalised learning into perspective. Whatever the jargon that is used, this is not new for good teachers - it is about being student or learner focused, it is about engaging learners, it is about starting at point of need and then challenging them in realistic ways and it is about encouraging and building reflective learners. It does of course necessitate a curriculum that is flexible enough to enable differentiated and individualised teaching.

Melissa Marshall's curator insight, December 12, 2013 10:39 PM

This has always been the case, but it particularly pertinent to how studets will use technology as well. This will line up to your expectations - if you expect them to mess around with their iPads - they will. If you expect they will be engaged in learning and model this - they will.

Educational Leadership:Assessment to Promote Learning:Seven Practices for Effective Learning

Educational Leadership:Assessment to Promote Learning:Seven Practices for Effective Learning | education reform | Scoop.it

Teachers in all content areas can use these seven assessment and grading practices to enhance learning and teaching.

Classroom assessment and grading practices have the potential not only to measure and report learning but also to promote it. Indeed, recent research has documented the benefits of regular use of diagnostic and formative assessments as feedback for learning (Black, Harrison, Lee, Marshall, & Wiliam, 2004).

Like successful athletic coaches, the best teachers recognize the importance of ongoing assessments and continual adjustments on the part of both teacher and student as the means to achieve maximum performance.

Unlike the external standardized tests that feature so prominently on the school landscape these days, well-designed classroom assessment and grading practices can provide the kind of specific, personalized, and timely information needed to guide both learning and teaching.

John Gougoulis's insight:

Very good teaching, and specifically assessment, advice no matter what year level or school context-consistent with good principles of assessment

John Gougoulis's insight:

Here’s the problem with cherry picking from other countries - there is an assumption (usually with little evidence) that each of these practises by themselves has an effect; and that somehow each of them if not as a package is transportable to another country with a different set of circumstances and will have a transformative effect. This may not be the case. It may be worth analysing what some common practises are across high performing countries.
