Teachers want a moratorium on results while conservatives want to back out altogether

Via Mel Riddile
John Gougoulis's insight:

There has been a lot of debate about the common core standards in the US - whether you agree with the standards reform or not, once again the reality continues to be (wherever we are) and the lessons not learnt (despite numerous examples), that poor implementation frustrates potentially good reform.

What we as adults experienced in school, as educators and students, will bear little resemblance to what lies ahead.
John Gougoulis's insight:

Three important trends and for me in the context of an Australian Curriculum...ONE, a digital curriculum linked to and enacted by digital teacher and student resources; TWO, clear curriculum content with flexibility for teachers and students to apply in contexts that are real and interesting for them; and THREE, a range of important skills and competencies taught and learnt across disciplines, subjects and learning areas

A fascinating report building on the "what" of learning - that's been a focus of the conversations around 21st century skills and competencies - and moving to the "how" and the pedagogies that will get us to deeper student learning and what that means. Their analysis of the implementation challenges around policy and system constraints, effective ways of measuring learning, teacher knowledge of how kids learn and effective approaches to instruction, resonates in Australia in the context now of how the national curriculum will play out. Looking forward to the ongoing conversations.

John Gougoulis's insight:

Terrific article that clearly summarises the challenges and opportunities in helping to better prepare young people  ie "without better curriculum, better teaching, and better tests, the emphasis on 21st century skills will be a superficial one that will sacrifice long-term gains for the appearance of short-term progress."

Why Learning Through Social Networks Is The Future

Why Learning Through Social Networks Is The Future | education reform | Scoop.it

Students Need Professional Learning Networks, Too

Learning to create, manage and promote a professional learning network (PLN) will soon become, if it’s not already, one of the most necessary and sought after skills for a global citizen, and as such, must become a prominent feature of any school curriculum.

Via Gust MEES
John Gougoulis's insight:

As educators or members of other professions, many of us are active members of professional learning networks and benefit enormously from such participation. This article highlights the importance of this activity for young people as learners in the 21st century and the skills that can be developed as an active ingredient of a teaching and learning program.

Ali Anani's curator insight, December 2, 2013 12:52 AM

The emergence of social networks impact is well-explained in this post.

Amanda Feliu's curator insight, December 2, 2013 4:55 AM

Un article molt interessant que parla sobre que els estudiants necessiten aprendre des de xarxes socials professionals.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, July 8, 2014 1:27 AM

Collaboration can be both a formal structure for learning activity but also an underpinning framework for engagement and fostering life-long learning.  Learning networks are part the new learning ecosystem and should be recognised and supported.
