 Skills

Maree Whiteley's insight:

ALL teachers (and parents) should read this...What are we talking about when we talk about ‘higher-order thinking’?

"In critical thinking, being able ‘to think’ means students can apply wise judgment or produce a reasoned critique. The goal of teaching is then to equip students to be wise by guiding them towards how to make sound decisions and exercise reasoned judgment..."

The Importance Of Critical Thinking

The Importance Of Critical Thinking | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it
Source: www.eftbrisbane.com | Original Post Date: January 3, 2009 - Critical thinking is an incredibly important skill. We use this skill (or ought to) in every aspect of our lives every single day. Although it’s an important part of academic and business success, it’s not often taught at school unless it’s part of a math, science, …
Maree Whiteley's insight:

This is a great infographic..."The basic definition of critical thinking is the ability to take information and make informed decisions without being influenced by your own opinions. Critical thinking is all about being in control of your own thought processes rather than letting them take control of you. It’s also about being able to think your way through the really tightly-targeted and clearly-honed messages that commercial interests bombard you with at every opportunity"

249 Bloom's Taxonomy Verbs For Critical Thinking
Maree Whiteley's insight:

Very useful list...Bloom’s Taxonomy’s verbs–also know as power verbs or thinking verbs–are extraordinarily powerful instructional planning tools. In fact, next to the concept of backwards-design and power standards, they are likely the most useful tool a teacher-as-learning-designer has access to. Why? They can be used for curriculum mapping, assessment design, lesson planning, personalizing and differentiating learning, and almost any other “thing” a teacher–or student–has to do.

Bringing objects and props into your classroom can create a world of curiosity and wonder for you and your students.
Maree Whiteley's insight:

Great questions to ask of your learning space..."Do you have mystery objects that attract the curiosity of students, leading them to ask questions and that foster meaningful conversations? Is your classroom visually stimulating for the students?

Does it cultivate creativity, and more importantly, is it filled with objects, images and even props that help your students learn, even when they think they're not learning?"

I love Webb's Depth of Knowledge and definitely prefer it over Bloom's.  Both tools are great, though, for making sure that you are asking a variety of questions that probe for a complex variety of answers.

Critical Thinking Pathways

Critical Thinking Pathways | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it
To teach critical thinking, consider applying six definitions of that discipline to the practices of authentic inquiry, PBL, and integrated studies.
Maree Whiteley's insight:

A very interesting read about one of my favourite topics (and it seems, everyone else's...)"Critical thinking is trendy these days. With 6.3 million hits resulting from a Google search -- six times "Bloom's Taxonomy" -- its importance is undeniable. Worldwide, critical thinking (CT) is integrated into finger-painting lessons, units on Swiss immigrants, discussions of Cinderella, and the Common Core State Standards. In short, critical thinking is more beloved than Egyptian cotton"

How Do We Educate Global Problem Solvers?

How Do We Educate Global Problem Solvers? | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it

What are the biggest problems in the world?

When I pose that question to students they mention war, poverty, climate change, and more. About a year ago,  a group of Connecticut middle school students produced such a list. Then I asked them to raise their hands if they could imagine us solving these problems. Of the 45 students, only a handful could.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Great ideas for Critical Thinking such as:

A humane education activity in which students analyze an everyday item, such as an article of clothing, an electronic device, a food, etc., and ask the following questions:

What are its effects, both positive and negative, on you as an individual consumer, on other people, on animals, and on the environment? What systems support, promote, and perpetuate it?What alternatives do more good and less harm, and if no alternative exists, what systems would need to change to make alternatives ubiquitous?

How do inquiry teachers….teach?

How do inquiry teachers….teach? | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it

When I first became fascinated in inquiry-based approaches (too many years ago to say!), the focus for many of my conversations and indeed, my early research, was on how to plan.  Back then, learning about inquiry helped me shift my thinking from planning thematically – or even in a more genuinely integrated way, to planning with a learning process in mind....Kath Murdoch

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Some very simple, practical ideas here, but this is my personal favourite...' let kids in on the secret – inquiry teachers have a transparent style'

Fuel Creativity in the Classroom with Divergent Thinking

Fuel Creativity in the Classroom with Divergent Thinking | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it

The word divergent is partly defined as "tending to be different or develop in different directions." Divergent thinking refers to the way the mind generates ideas beyond proscribed expectations and rote thinking -- what is usually referred to "thinking outside the box," and is often associated with creativity. Convergent thinking, on the other hand, requires one to restrict ideas to those that might be correct or the best solution to a problem.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

"Teachers also might find divergent thinking and behavior a challenge when students ignore directions and rules, and if we are honest with ourselves, display personality traits that operate outside societal norms..."
