What Children Can Teach Education Leaders about Creativity | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it

In a world fueled by technology, an emphasis on creativity could help change today's education system and prepare students with skills they need. That's a major problem that Ken Robinson highlighted in his keynote address at the EDUCAUSE 2013 conference for higher education IT leaders.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

More wise words from Sir Ken Robinson..."Creativity — the idea of original thinking — most often comes when people ask a different question,"

This resource is interesting as it discusses the use of questioning in the classroom. It explains how the teacher takes a step back and allows the students to ask the questions instead of simply answering the teachers questions. It also has steps or rules for teachers, to help their students to produce their own questions. It explores the concept that allowing students to create their own questions can develop higher order thinking skills as creating questions requires deeper thinking than simply answering questions.

So, how does this fit in with the Design and Technologies curriculum? When students are conducting investigations, experimenting, exploring, deconstructing or even producing produces, they should be asking questions. One aspect of the Design and Technologies curriculum  (2014) is decision-making processes which is informed by ethical, legal, aesthetic and functional factors. To make decision effectively, students need to be able to question there plans or products to make sure it meets these different factors.

While this article is a blog. The website has many useful ideas and discussions as well as learning strategies and games.

Jheny Cifuentes Tobon's curator insight, May 26, 2018 3:24 PM
In a century where everything is changing, the educational system and traditional thinking of it has to change, too. Nowadays, students are taking a more critical stance on what they are being taught, and as teacher we must encourage them to do so. Students can be the ones who do the questions instead of teachers. In this order, students need to become more empowered in the classroom; they need to analyze and judge the content they are being taught and come up with analytical questions.
This is a strategy that has been used in many schools around the world and that has given good results; it is time that we use new methodologies in which students play a more important role in the learning process so that there can be a real change.

Are you passionate about opening up new vistas of experiences and understanding for others which – absent your intervention – they might never experience? Are you passionate about creating moments of unforgettable learning? Learning that is SO engaging, so motivating, so interesting, and so fun – that those fortunate enough to experience it will NEVER forget it? Nevada elementary teacher Brian Crosby is this kind of person, and this kind of educational leader. Brian gave the world a seventeen minute glimpse into his 4th grade classroom a few weeks ago in Denver at the TEDx event. Critical Thinking From The Ground Up

Critical Thinking From The Ground Up | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it

Images of critical thinking in full bloom abound—teams in furious concentration to send rockets to Mars, the ferment of ideas in businesses like Apple and Google, and the patient concentration of a Nobel Prize-winning scientist.  Education’s work, however, is with the early seedlings of these fruits that present fewer pictures. If a child needs a 2-degree course correction to find his way to intellectual greatness, making the change early is easiest and cheapest if we can understand how to guide him

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Interesting research..."this work has enabled me to observe many children with similar school experiences that seldom include a foundation for critical thinking.  Seven points I view as systemically underserved could, if better addressed, enhance children’s thinking as they mature:..."

The Shift From Teaching Content To Teaching Learning

The Shift From Teaching Content To Teaching Learning

What does it mean to read?

What does it mean to think?

What does it mean to solve problems?

What should you be doing in your head when you translate the Spanish?

In sum, what is meant to be going on inside that black box called the mind and what is actually going on in their minds? These are our Essential Questions as teachers. It is the continual addressing of these questions that moves us from the ranks of the naïve and okay teachers to skilled professionals.

We move from being “teachers” to coaches of learning.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

"...That is why John Hattie titled his important work Visible Learning because the best academic achievement results from explicit and practical clarity about learning goals and means of achieving them."

The Difference Between Inference & Prediction

The Difference Between Inference & Prediction | Critical and Creative Thinking for active learning | Scoop.it

Understanding the difference between inference and prediction is one of classic challenges in literacy instruction, in addition to the difference between main idea and theme, mood and tone, and reading versus deep reading, and so on. Some of it is a mater of jargon. An argument could be made that, like main idea and theme, that distinguishing between the two is more trouble than it’s worth.

But if we are truly teaching students to close read a variety of texts and digital media, understanding the nuance of reading ourselves as teachers of all content areas is important

Maree Whiteley's insight:

This is so true. "... if we are truly teaching students to close read a variety of texts and digital media, understanding the nuance of reading ourselves as teachers of all content areas is important"
