There are a lot of things you can measure about you social media efforts. I have compiled a list of KPIs (key performance indicators) that you can consider for you specific activities. One thing to remember is to remember that you should set at least some metrics that indicate if you are turning profit. Otherwise you can reach your KPIs and still loose money. ... Now, before you begin be sure to set the baseline. Look at the set of your chosen social media KPIs and and record the current value. These numbers are important but the rate of change is the main indicator for most of these metrics. For example it’s fantastic if you get 1000 followers in a day but not so if you get them over the year. Concentrate on the rate of change of your chosen key performance indicators. This can be also expressed as a frequency of events. For example you could measure how many comments you get on Facebook per day, week or month. You can combine several KPIs into one that is more meaningful for you. Ratios, such as comments per blog post, retweets per followers, help you measure audience activity and engagement.

"Getting a handle on how stakeholders' and employees' view of risk is difficult but there are ways to come close." The most important concept in risk management is: You almost never mitigate all risks. For example, Saturn could crash into the Earth, but what could you do about it? Many enteprises feel that all social media risks must be mitigated in order to engage with SM (emphasis Marty's). If your company is like this, ask yourself, "Do we worry as much about email? Do we not use it because employees could share confidential or inflammatory material using email?" This is a good article on risk perception and management. Via @Christinekorda
*** Mike is on it here. At Content Marketing World the bigger companies were SCARED of SM from INTERNAL and EXTERNAL. I pointed out that where do you want the tough conversations on your site or on YELP (or its more bratty cousins). Personally I want any content on MY sites. I wrote about how to turn negative reviews to MONEY (and Mike and I are good enough friends I can ride on his Scoop). Great job as always my friend. Hope your app is in for our Curation Contest as there is only 3 Days left :). Marty

It's no secret Apple, the most valuable public company in the world, is making major cash off today's must-have tech gadgets — but how much?
**** Apple's cash in the bank is bigger than all but 52 companies. Their profits crush Walmart desipite have sales only a quarter as large. Not what you MAKE but what you TAKE that counts and Apple is using design to win hearts and minds and prove how profitable such a strategy can be in a flat, furioius and connected world. Marty

Looking for how to increase traffic to your blog or website, this article will give you some very useful information to achieve your goal. [note MG]
We’ve all been taught to create high-quality content to attract links. This argument is usually stated in the context of a blog that basically becomes an authority where you start to build a following around consistent, fresh content—think big sites like Problogger or Boing Boing.
This is not the technique I’m talking about.
Today, I’m talking about a link-building technique that’s bigger, better and quite possibly able to put you on the map faster than you would ever imagine. I’m talking about building a linkable asset—something you do by following the steps I’m about to describe.
First, let’s define “linkable asset.”
What is a linkable asset?

TED Talks iPad storyteller Joe Sabia introduces us to Lothar Meggendorfer, who created a bold technology for storytelling: the pop-up book.
The Journal of Online Learning and Teaching... Abstract In this self-study, five university instructors who taught the same online literacy course during a summer session formed an online learning community. Through engaging in e-mail exchanges, participating in online discussions, posting weekly teaching reflections, and visiting one another’s online courses, they sought to answer the research question: How can an online literacy learning community support university instructors who teach various sections of a common online course? In answering the research question, the researchers identified the themes that were most prominent in their discussions and reflections, and also the themes that played minor roles in the forming of the literacy learning community. Keywords : self-study, university instructor, online teaching and learning, literacy learning community, NVivo.

There's been a lot of debate about whether a Forbes blog post that excerpted and summarized a New York Times story qualifies as journalism or not -- but to some extent that's a red herring.

It’s like when you’re at a noisy party and it’s hard to hear the person talking to you 2 feet away, but suddenly you say something awkward and the room quiets down. Now everyone can hear you. The same is true with the internet. When there is less other noise to compete with (ie fewer Tweets, emails, blog posts, etc) your content can gain attention more easily.

***** Found this great read this morning that helped me think of Generation Next in new way. Embedded on my blog so I wouldn't lose it and highly recommended for anyone who wants to reach a generation who has, unlike mine, grown up online.
**** I went to college with Rebecca and she is beyond smart. Her Altimeter group engagement study is one of the most important things I've read in a long time and I read A LOT of Internet marketing stuff. Great job RL. Marty
Rebecca Lieb, my colleague at Altimeter Group released a new report, “Content: The New Marketing Equation Why Organizations Must Rebalance.” The report helps organizations find balance in the creation of effective content strategies while delivering value to stakeholders and consumers and also the bottom line. It’s safe to assume that the attention of the audience as we knew it is waning. And when we look at the online and mobile behavior of connected customers, a sense of responsibility emerges as everyday people become media beacons in their own right. As such, they rigorously share and curate for their audience with an editorial-style approach as what was once a static audience is now an audience with an audience of audiences. People are learning that there are rewards for contributing to signal instead of the noise. Those who do not, learn the hard way…that people will disconnect in order to preserve the integrity of their stream.
