Women's Month in Belize

Women's Month in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Happy Women's Month!  The Women's Month Booklet for Belize has been released.  In it are messages from Kim Simplis-Barrow and Minister Martinez from the Ministry of Human Development, schedules of events for Cayo and all of Belize, and biographies of female role models throughout Belize.  The image was made by Greg Godfrey.  International Women's Day is March 8th.  Have a great Women's Month!

"The Women’s Department has shown each year that there is no

shortage of role models in this country.  I hope that the bios contained in this booklet will serve as a beacon of hope for those who place a limit on where they can go because of where they come from.  Let’s keep the momentum growing by motivating more women and girls to uplift themselves, rise above the odds and chart their own paths to success.  I want to congratulate the awardees, not only for the accomplishments that earned them this recognition, but for having the drive and determination that made it possible.  Happy
Women’s Month to all!"

Predator Party at the Belize Zoo

Predator Party at the Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

There are a couple of birthdays at the Belize Zoo this week, and some Cayo students got to go and celebrate the occasion.

"The Belize Zoo recently celebrated two important milestones, with a fantastic “Predator Party” for Junior Buddy the Jaguar’s sixth birthday and Panama the Harpy Eagle’s tenth birthday.  To mark the occasions, zoo officials invited children from La Democracia Pre-School and the Infant Two class from the Howard Smith School in Benque Viejo del Carman to join in the celebration and learn more about the contribution of these apex predators to the health of the forest."

Lonely Planet Ranks Belize as Most Family Friendly

Lonely Planet Ranks Belize as Most Family Friendly | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Lonely Planet released their list of the most family friendly places, and Belize is listed first.  Cayo is mentioned, of course, and the picture is Caracol.

"But the interior doesn’t mean sacrificing fun in the water, with underground rivers to tube, jungle lodges on swimming holes and Mayan ruins reached by boat.  If you rent a car, a tad pricey (about US$80 per day), you can connect a few dots at your own leisure.  For an unforgettable stay, try the remote and family-friendly Barton Creek Outpost in the Cayo District, with a rope swing on the country’s finest swimming hole.  And pull in for Garifuna drum lessons at the laid-back beach of Hopkins."

It was an amazing night of music at the Benque House of Culture Friday night.  Not only did Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy wow the audience by playing some of their favorites, but the Cayo Music School was also there, and played some great music from Belize, and Benque.  The Benque House of Culture deserves a big commendation for making this concert happen.

Belizean Music Influences Danny Michel

Belizean Music Influences Danny Michel | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Danny Michel has his 10th album out, and once again it was inspired by Belizean music.  This time, he recorded with the Garifuna Collective in Benque.  In some of his previous music videos, you can see how he incorporates his visits to Belize into them.

See him on Youtube with the Garifuna Collective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZUs1KwTd4s

"Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me is a collaboration with Benque Players and the indigenous music of Belize’s Garifuna Collective.  It was recorded and produced at the Stonetree Records studio of Benque Players’ Ivan Duran.  It’s in the creative mode of Simon’s Graceland, the famous 1986 collaboration with South African and New Orleans zydeco musicians.  But Michel’s album is far more personal...  The result is a wonderful blend of Michel’s folk style and Latin rhythms.  He plans to bring Benque Players north in the summer to do folk festivals in Canada."

Belize Economic Update Looking Good

Belize Economic Update Looking Good | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Good news for Belize on the economic front: economic activity, real GDP growth, is forecasted to expand by 2.7% in 2013.  Overnight tourism numbers are expected to go up also, and Cayo will surely benefit immensely from that.

"Economic activity is forecasted to expand by 2.7% in 2013, as the underlying factors that boosted activity in 2012 are expected to moderate.  The projection, which is subject to sizeable downside risks such as commodity price shocks and weather-related setbacks, assumes that the gradual upturn in global growth to 3.5% (Source: IMF World Economic Outlook) continues to support the tertiary sector through the tourism channel.  The primary sector is expected to return to low single digit growth owing largely to a return to normal crop cycles and a forecasted downturn in citrus output.  The secondary sector is expected to eke out a small increase despite headwinds facing the petroleum and domestic electricity generation sub-sectors."
