A good primer for curating a subject, which students of any age can certainly benefit from. While intended for Scoop.it users, it certainly applies to any similar site.

And it is a great opportunity for ESL students too. Using Scoopit gives them the opportunity to read and write, practice their English language outside the classroom, and play an important role in the 21st Century learning process.

SCOOPS -- I began using Scoop when I was defining myself a LITE FEET DANCER. There was no single source of info about Lite Feet dance, a NYC Born Battle dance phenom and YouTube Sensation. I created LITE FEET SCOOP TO reference for my own resume but also to provide anyone interested a link to the multitude of YOUTUBE Channels, Sound Cloud and personal sites dedicated to this unique art form and the talented dancers who participate.

Thanks to Alan Berkson intelligent use of hashtags as he retweeted his own post dating back to December 2012, and to Trendspottr, who made it easy for me to discover it, I have just run into one of the most inspirational short posts about curation that I have read in some time. The post is quite short, but it packs such an important truth, that I can't but bring it to you in its full integrity. "Being able to properly vet might be the most important skill of the 21st Century. Not curing sick animals. Not retiring from military service. I’m talking about “subjecting to thorough examination or evaluation.” We’ve been trained to rely on experts to do this for us.
This is a double-edged sword. As individuals we can develop and express thought leadership. However, also as individuals, we can no longer solely rely on third parties for pre-vetting our experts.
Content curation, if intended as the art of helping other people discover, learn and make sense of things they are interested into, is all about cultivating your own ability to become an expert by honing the skills of research, vetting and contextualization. This is it. Must read. Must share. 10/10 Original post by Alan Berkson: http://blog.intelligistgroup.com/that-third-kind-of-vet/

Robin Good's insight:
Here's a valuable resource on content curation, "distilled" by the students of the DCurate MOOC lead Martin Couzins and Sam Burrough which organizes over 60 different articles, guides and tools on the topic.
This resources collection is presented in the form of a Pearltrees interactive map, organized into eight sections:
1. Why Do We Need Curators
2. What Is Digital Curation
3. Aggregation vs. Curation
4. It's All About Audience
5. How Do We Find Valuable Content
6. How Do You Decide What To Curate
7. Curation Tools
8. Contributions from participants
If you are new to content curation this is a good resource to bookmark and keep as a reference.

Gibbon is a new web app which makes it extremely easy to create beautiful-to-look-at learning playlists by simply adding specific article or video links to your custom-made content compilation. Gibbon actually goes the extra mile by grabbing the full content from each original source you curate, by integrating it into your learning playlist, and by stripping out of any design distractions it may have been accompanied by. Learning playlists can be easily edited, arranged and shared with others. Gibbon offers a wonderful and elegant design, providing a clutter-free, elegant and very effective way to present and organize content lists. Furthermore Gibbon adds a few specific touches that make this curation tool particularly fit for learning a topic, by providing reading time estimates for each link in a list, striking out titles of completed readings, highlighting with simple icons the type of content showcased (articles, video, etc.), and creating a focused and distraction-free reading environment. My comment: Gibbon looks very promising to me, as it attempts not to be another generic curation tool but addresses a very specific need and application while providing a very well designed and usable tool. Notwithstanding the beauty and simplicity of the UI I felt the need for an integrated search tool that would facilitate me in grabbing those content items I wanted to add into a learning playlist. I also had several problems in trying to add new content to my test playlist. New URLs would "time out" easily while being fetched and all of the content added via the bookmarklet or the Google extension didn't show up in my collection. A very promising tool to effectively curate content learning playlists. Free to use. Try it out now: https://gibbon.co/ Added to the Curation for Learning Tools section of the Content Curation Tools Supermap.

Sure it is!! Last week I showed my students how to scoopit. I thought that since they seem to love Facebook, Scoopit was going to be a wow experience for them. However, contrary to my expectations most of them did not show a real interest, or at least the kind of interest I expected. What a pain! Maybe it is a matter of time, culture, love for reading and writing, etc. From a group of 12 youngers, only 2 of them said: Thanks teacher, I like it! Well... I will keep on trying...

Guillaume Decugis offers a valuable perspective on curation, the impact of Google algorithm changes on SEO and side references of course to Matt Cutts. In a phrase: "Add value!"
Steve Hartkopf's curator insight,
October 7, 2013 3:18 PM
Anytime Matt speaks about SEO we should listen. In this video he specifically discusses SEO and content creation. He recommends a separate website page for old blog posts. I assume Google can identify the old content as separate and, therefore, acceptable rather than someone trying to game the system by throwing up a bunch of old or curated content in hopes of improve search engine results on the back of other people's content.
