Leadership as Provocative Competence

Leadership as Provocative Competence | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Jazz has always been a good metaphor for the art of leadership. InYes to the Mess, Frank Barrett, knocks out of the park. How do we create a culture where people can innovate? Barrett wants us to look at leadership differently and increase our leadership repertoire beyond hierarchical models, “so that we more fully appreciate the power of relationships.” And in that he succeeds.

Barrett introduces us to what he calls Provocative Competence. It is the capacity “to create the discrepancy and dissonance that trigger people to move away from habitual positions and repetitive patterns.” Barrett says “Leadership as a design activity means creating space so that people will be tempted to grow on their own.”

A Leadership Blog: The Titleless Leader

A Leadership Blog: The Titleless Leader | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

For Russell, titleless leadership is based on four cornerstones:

Self-Alignment: Behavioral integrity. People remember what you are.

Possibility Seeds:

- Encourages and nurtures others.

-Titleless leaders plant possibility seeds “not because there’s a mentoring- or succession-planning program, but because they’re operating with a better together approach.”

- Soul Courage: Step-up and offer your best self. Push outside your comfort zone to do the right thing.

- and Winning Philosophies: It’s only when we’re all winning that we truly all win.

==> Focus on group wins and not the politics of individual wins. <==

The Titleless Leader is a handbook of behaviors and thinking to help you lead from where you are. Certainly, they’re not easy and require some change in perspective, but will create more meaning and value in you workplace and more importantly in your life.

Cross-Cultural Leadership: How to Create People Alignment (Part 2)

Cross-Cultural Leadership: How to Create People Alignment (Part 2) | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Leadershipwatch – Aad Boot

In Part 1 of this series I wrote about the importance of people alignment as a crucial competence for today’s leaders. Especially in a globalized world, where cross-cultural and multinational challenges are becoming more and more a normal part of the leader’s job, leaders need to understand how to create people alignment. In Part 1 I also described how ‘personal alignment’ plays an important role when creating people alignment.

This Part 2 is about another crucial element of people alignment: ‘team alignment’.

Career Coach: What are you doing to keep learning?

Career Coach: What are you doing to keep learning? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Career Coach | In today’s complex environment, continual learning is more important than ever.

We can no longer view learning as a one-time event where we attend a college or university, get a degree and are then “done” learning. Instead, learning should be an ongoing process. We have to keep enhancing our skills in critical thinking, creativity and innovation, analytics, people and leadership and networking, among other knowledge and skills.

Leadership and EQ - RealTime Leadership

Leadership and EQ - RealTime Leadership | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In the past, it might have been true that leaders could succeed simply because they were smart. But that’s no longer all it takes. While technical skills remain important, our emotional intelligence (referred to as EQ or EI) is just as important as our IQ. In fact, research shows that a leader’s emotional intelligence has a direct impact on the success of an organization.

Daniel Goleman, a thought-leader on the topic of EI, says this about emotional intelligence:

“If your emotional abilities aren’t in hand, if you don’t have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can’t have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far.”

What is Servant Leadership?

What is Servant Leadership? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

"The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature."

"The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?"

3 Approaches to Ethics: Principles, Outcomes and Integrity

3 Approaches to Ethics: Principles, Outcomes and Integrity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The social world is messy and ethics helps us muddle through. By Arthur Dobrin, DSW...

All of morality aims at the same thing but there are several basic ways to get there. If you prefer, each approach is like a different tool—a hammer, a nail, a level. Using the right tool for the right job makes it easier to do your work and increases the chances that you’ll wind up with a quality product.

If you can grasp the basic ideas of each of the different approaches to ethics, you will be in a better position to make a sound ethical decision.

There are other ways in which moral philosophy and philosophers can be categorized, but establishing ethical theories into their three schools is a useful way to understand ethics.

He also runs the Innovation Genome Project, in which he and his team are researching the top 1,000 innovations in world history, looking for practical patterns and insights that people can apply to their day-to-day work.

So the relevant, two-chambered question here is:

1. Why are we so confused about what innovation is?
2. Why are we so confused about how innovation is actually done?

The Ethics and Responsibilities of the 21st Century Classroom: Part One

The Ethics and Responsibilities of the 21st Century Classroom: Part One | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

When I think about the “ethics and responsibilities of the 21st century classroom,” I think not only about our ethical responsibilities toward students but about our ethical responsibilities toward teachers. I am very concerned that the drop-out rate of K-12 teachers is even higher than the drop-out rate of K-12 students in the U.S. and in many other countries around the world.

As I’ve gone around the U.S. and abroad talking with teachers, I’ve seen over and over how beleaguered they are: by (a) too many rules, (b) too many constantly-changing systems and theories, by (c) too many “learning objectives,” by (d) too much pressure to deliver “content,” by (e) too many expectations about high test scores (on standardized tests that often do not measure real learning and content), by (f) ever-escalating and rigid standards of “accountability,” and, added to all of this, by (g) too much faddish, expensive new technology dumped not only on kids but on teachers as if the technology itself magically will take care of a, b, c, d, e, and f.

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
George Couros (@gcouros on Twitter) is the Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning for Parkland School Division, a large district near Edmonton, Alberta.

As many school administrators are enjoying their summer break, we all tend to think of ways that we can make our school better in the upcoming year. Often, I point school principals and district leaders to a powerful post by Will Richardson that helps us point the finger right at ourselves when we are looking to push our school ahead. Richardson states:

"Meaningful change ain't gonna happen for our kids if we're not willing to invest in it for ourselves first. At the heart, it's not about schools . . . it's about us."

4 Ways Leaders Can Overcome the Fear of Conflict

4 Ways Leaders Can Overcome the Fear of Conflict | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The thoughtLEADERS Blog covers leadership, communications, strategy and operations. All posts are practical and applicable to help you apply the methods we teach.

What I’m attacking is a belief that we as leaders can’t speak our minds because we might hurt someone’s feelings. It’s that mindset that erodes the core of leadership over time and turns it into gentle corrective actions that end up having no impact whatsoever. Sure, no one felt corrected or had their feelings hurt but they now effectively have no freakin’ idea what they’re supposed to do or what they did wrong in the first place because the message was diluted.

We need to fix this. Now. So here’s what I propose:

Why Emotional Intelligence is Needed More Than Ever

Why Emotional Intelligence is Needed More Than Ever | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

College students are often very adept at “being social” through technological means such as social networking websites and other virtual communities. However, once they enter the classroom and students no longer have electronic communication to rely upon for their interactions, it may be challenging at first for them to develop interpersonal and productive relationships with other classmates through non-digital or face-to-face communication. That’s when emotional intelligence is needed because it strengthens the skills required to interact effectively with others, which are often under-utilized with electronic communication.

Daniel Goleman is a thought-leader in the field of emotional intelligence and in his article, The Value of Emotional Intelligence, identified the “four components that will turn struggling students into more successful ones.” Goleman described emotional self-awareness, emotional self-management, social awareness, and relationship management as the most important aspects of becoming emotionally intelligent. In the following video presentation Goleman shares more about this topic.

What is Creativity?

In the leadership development world, creativity is currently getting a great deal of attention. But what is it? Can you learn it? Is it a skill? How do we lead in ways that encourage it?

When we explore the question “What is creativity?” from a thinking and learning point of view, an open and active mind is clearly required – one that can see new possibilities. But is there more to it than that? This post explores the variables that make up what we think of as “creativity.”

What Makes a Master Teacher

What Makes a Master Teacher | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

My name is George Couros, and I am currently a Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning with Parkland School Division, located in Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada. The schools are from ages K-12, and I love working with kids of all ages.

I am passionate about distributed leadership within my division, and believe that creating a collaborative environment with all stakeholders, will help to ensure that we meet the best needs of all children.

The term “master teacher” seems to get thrown around a lot, but is something that many educators aspire to be. In my ten years in the field of education, I would say that the definition of “master teacher” has definitely changed. When I think of a master teacher, here are the qualities that I would suggest they have:

1. Connects with kids first

2. Teaches kids first and curriculum second

3. Ensures that they draw relevance to curriculum

4. Works with students to develop a love of learning

5. Embodies lifelong learning

6. Focuses on learning goals as opposed to performance goals

7. Ensures that “character education” is an essential part of learning

8. Passionate about the content they teach

9. A master teacher is a “school teacher” -

10. Strong communication skills

When you cross the street, you look both ways to make sure it’s safe. Staying safe on the Internet is similar. It takes some common sense steps.

- STOP: Before you use the Internet, take time to understand the risks and learn how to spot potential problems.

- THINK: Take a moment to be certain the path ahead is clear. Watch for warning signs and consider how your actions online could impact your safety, or your family’s.

- CONNECT: Enjoy the Internet with greater confidence, knowing you’ve taken the right steps to safeguard yourself and your computer.

Protect yourself and help keep the web a safer place for everyone.
