Digital curation - the preservation and repurposing of content. Using digital hubs to collect, collate and make a contribution to conversations in your area of academic interest.
I have rehearsed this scenario before, but try to imagine we live in a world where printed media had not been invented, and our only source of information and entertainment was the Internet.
And then someone came up with a really smart idea, and gathered together a group of really clever people, got them to sift through the mass of information that's freely available in digital form, decide what's important and what's not, what you can trust and what you can't, and put it all together in a thing called a newspaper, which can be delivered to your very home.
It's portable, it's not dependent on a wireless connection and, for many, there is also an intrinsic pleasure in turning over the pages. I posit this idea not to promote the virtue of newspapers, but to illustrate my growing feeling that one of the most prized - and undervalued - commodities in the modern world is curation.

Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education
The result is that students not only have access to seemingly endless amounts of information, but also personalize content and reorganize it in a fashion that best allows them to make sense of a topic, and to share it with peers (Lessig 2008).
===> Teachers at all levels of education must be prepared to negotiate the digital realities of their students as they design learning experiences around critical inquiry, analysis, and evaluation. <===
===> Indeed, educators today have a certain responsibility to focus student skills and experiences in an exercise of participation with the surrounding media (Jenkins et al. 2009). <===

Wikipedia describes Digital curation as ...the selection, preservation, maintenance, collection and archiving of digital assets. Digital curation establishes, maintains and adds value to repositories of digital data for present and future use. This is often accomplished by archivists, librarians, scientists, historians, and scholars. The term curation in the past commonly referred to museum and library professionals. It has since been applied to interaction with social media including compiling digital images, web links and movie files.
Curation as a teacher is vital. Curation as a administrator is vital. Curation as a leader is vital. Curation as a life-long learner is vital. Curation helps us interact with the resources available; it helps us categorize, organize, and share resources with others. In curating resources we learn, grow, and contribute to our professional and personal learning networks in a hugely beneficial capacity that is only outmatched by the reciprocity it produces if done using social media like Diigo, Twitter, blogs, etc. Via Dr. Tom D'Amico (@TDOttawa)

Gebruik twitter om vragen te stellen aan je netwerk. Ik heb hier al veel aan gehad,
Twitter is a powerful educational social networking website that has a huge potential for teachers professional development.
Twitter is also ideal as a PLN where you get to connect with other educators from all around the globe and exchange teaching and learning materials with them. Building a PLN, however, requires making acquaintances with similar like-minded teachers and also developing your list of followers; but once you have such a solid PLN problems of maintaining it and staying updated with what others tweet become a tricky challenge.
I have curated for you some powerful tools to help you benefit the maximum from the PLN you create on Twitter. Check them out below.

Gust MEES's insight:
Buzz used to be an intangible — something you just felt. No longer.
===> Look for online "curators." Experts who collect and share "best of" resources on specific subjects are analogous to museum curators who carefully choose which pieces to display. <=== In social media, curators do a good job of keeping track of people's conversations as they occur in online social spaces and quickly channeling that information, in some cases using tools such as Storify to distill conversations. For example, the World Economic Forum in Davos uses Storify to put together summaries of its events. Canadian financial cooperative Desjardins wanted to learn about new electronic currencies, so it tracked a UK community dedicated to crowdfunding and sought experts in Africa on mobile-payment practices. The company prefers such information-gathering methods to relying on market-research firms. ===> If you can find the right set of curators to follow, you can reduce your reliance on searches of traditional databases and publications. <===

My Thoughts: You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.

My sister refuses to use social media, but she allows my niece to use it unsupervised. Not only is that dangerous, but it is also a lost opportunity to interact within her daughter's social life. This is particularly important to a single mom who works overtime to make ends meet. It doesn't require a huge time commitment; just having a "presence" on Facebook would be sufficient. I feel that my niece is not getting "enough" of her mother. Perhaps she would be less prone to create online drama if my sister was there listening in and guiding her.
