ABOUT THIS PROJECT This is a robotic owl that looks around for cool people, and can tell whether you're happy or upset. If you're excited enough, he will eventually let you take a sticker (or other small giveaway). He's named Archimedes, after Merlin's familiar in TheOnceandFutureKing. Of course, it's also reminiscent of the cyborg owl in Blade Runner.
First up, if you don't know the Google AIY Vision Kit, check out the details here! This is the basis for the robot's smarts. The code for this project is coming soon.
It started when we were invited to contribute something to the Google booth at Bay Area Maker Faire. I took a really, really long time to figure out what to build—what it would look like, how it would animate, how it would dispense the stickers... in the end, I went with this cute and fairly challenging design.
This robot is versatile enough that I can bring it along to different events, such as the CODAME Artobots Festival and the Arm/Hackster Asia Tour (since the Raspberry Pi runs on an Arm chip, the Broadcom BCM2835). In other words, I can justify spending this much time on one project because I can re-use and iterate upon it. I'm also excited to have a sidekick in the office :)

Oskitone’s new and improved OKAY 2 is a mind-blowing DIY synth that you can 3D print and put together on your own. Hone your 3D printing and soldering skills with this sweet musical instrument and let the sounds sweep you away!
Looking for a new musical instrument to play? Why not use your 3D printer to create a synthesizer that is completely tailored to your style? Well, we’ve got a great project for all the musically-minded makers to take on over the weekend.
Last year, the San Francisco-based one-man musical instrument studio Oskitone released its first version of the OKAY synth, and has since refined the concept in a variety of ways. The new and improved OKAY 2 is an analog, monophonic, square wave synthesizer that is largely made up of 3D printed parts. It was designed on OpenSCAD and EAGLE by a man named Tommy, who is in charge of Oskitone.
Cartesian Co.’s rapid prototyping machine is putting the “print" back in printed circuit boards. Despite how far 3D printing has come over the past couple of years, a number of startups have been looking for new ways to take it one step further. Rather than just spit out odds and ends in plastic, what if you could quickly extrude something a bit smarter, like circuit boards, on demand? That’s the idea behind Cartesian Co.’s rapid prototyping machine dubbed Argentum.

What are Exporters? Exporters are native software features or external plug-ins that implement the Sketchfab API. They allow you to publish models directly to your Sketchfab account without leaving the 3D application. You can edit model metadata (name, description, tags) and Privacy options. In some exporters, you can also access advanced settings like lighting, texture baking, and decimation.

Recently I bought myself the latest model of 3D-printers from Formlabs, the Form2.
The Form 2 delivers high-resolution prints in Industrial 3D printing quality and it is very, very expensive. (I had been waiting (and saving money) for 3 years until I made the financial plunge to get such a machine)
But it has the huge advantage that dosen’t require a lot of tweaking and experimenting to run, you just take it out of the box, you install it and it runs !! It comes with the right software, the materials you need to use are in sich a packaging (1 Liter resin cartridges !) that you can concentrate on the objet you’re printing and not on the maintenance of the machine. The system recognises the resin type, configures settings, and allows you to keep track of resin supplies.
The Form 2 is a SLA printer where SLA stand for Stereolithography. SLA is an additive manufacturing – commonly referred to as 3D printing – technology that converts liquid materials into solid parts, layer by layer, by selectively curing them using a light source in a process called photopolymerization. SLA is widely used to create models, prototypes, patterns, and production parts for a range of industries from engineering and product design to manufacturing, dentistry, jewelry, model making, and education. Available completely free of charge, DesignSpark Mechanical is a new and powerful 3D modelling software tool that is very easy to learn and provides a highly intuitive user experience to help engineers create design concepts in 3D faster than ever before. Developed in conjunction with SpaceClaim, the leading provider of flexible and powerful 3D modelling software for engineers, DesignSpark Mechanical overcomes two major barriers to entry faced by potential users that are new to 3D design: prohibitive cost and the considerable investment in learning time associated with traditional 3D CAD tools.
