Ask your students, What do you know or have you heard about ChatGPT? Have you experimented with it yourself? What did you think of it? What questions do you have?
Depending on their responses, they may need a broad introduction to the tool. If so, we recommend an episode of The Daily called “Did Artificial Intelligence Just Get Too Smart?” (Students can follow along via the transcript.)

ChatGPT gets “eyes and ears” with plugins that can interface AI with the world Plugins allow ChatGPT to book a flight, order food, send email, execute code (and more).
On Thursday, OpenAI announced a plugin system for its ChatGPT AI assistant. The plugins give ChatGPT the ability to interact with the wider world through the Internet, including booking flights, ordering groceries, browsing the web, and more. Plugins are bits of code that tell ChatGPT how to use an external resource on the Internet.
Basically, if a developer wants to give ChatGPT the ability to access any network service (for example: "looking up current stock prices") or perform any task controlled by a network service (for example: "ordering pizza through the Internet"), it is now possible, provided it doesn't go against OpenAI's rules.

Changing The Learning Process
Until now, this level of personalization has been limited to small classrooms, though AI makes every classroom feel like a small one. AI systems analyze students' progress on a scale that teachers alone cannot, effectively minimizing the student-teacher ratio problem. AI systems also erase distance. Learning happens anywhere at any time.
Another benefit of AI-augmented education is that it isn't judgemental. Constructive criticism from an AI tutor can feel less intimidating than a fellow human. Students, especially the underserved, who may not be accustomed to such feedback, are likely to respond more positively to this feedback and are thus more likely to seek it out in the future. Feedback from AI systems is instantaneous and thereby extremely effective and can be acted on immediately. Today, it can be difficult to understand the significance and potential impact that artificial intelligence (AI) has for humanity. From Siri to IBM’s Watson to Hollywood portrayals of killer robots, it’s not clear what we should ultimately expect from this exponential technology.
What is clear: AI-powered products and services have made it into nearly every aspect of our personal and professional lives in just a few years. And as AI solutions continue to emerge and converge, that pace of change will only continue to accelerate. It’s easy to find scenarios of a utopian future of abundance where machines do all the hard work—as well as grim scenarios where unemployment soars as traditional workers are replaced by increasingly capable machines.
With such rapid progress, it’s difficult to make assumptions about the future of AI. But instead of focusing on the unknown, we can examine what we know about AI, its current applications, and potential future impact.

Applications like Auto-GPT, AgentGPT, BabyAGI, and GodMode are building on OpenAI's large language models (LLMs) to automate tasks using ChatGPT. Creating a project with ChatGPT requires a prompt for every new step, but with AI agents, all you need to do is give it an overarching goal, and let it get to work.

I love educational technology. When technologies were first available online, I was an early adopter, and often got brutally criticized by administrators and colleagues in my K-6 settings for having students use the internet for research, use web tools, create webpages in wikis, and work virtually with schools in other states and countries (for example, see their work from 2008 at http://weewebwonders.pbworks.com/). Now, similar work is often seen as innovative by colleagues. Boy, have times thankfully changed, but I have not. I still am an early adopter of technologies in that I believe many can benefit students in their learning.
As many in education know, commentary about ChatGPT is appearing on the news, social media, and the internet. As I always do, I am exploring its use in my classes (elementary-level gifted education). This post describes its use in education from the perspectives of ChatGPT, itself, and from a handful of educators. Later, I describe and show the work of my students. I conclude with tools for detecting machine-generated text, and provide a parting shot.
