Deadly stinks and life-saving aromas in plague-stricken London

Deadly stinks and life-saving aromas in plague-stricken London | Year 8: Tudors; French Revolution; Empire & Slavery | Scoop.it
In the plague-ravaged London of 1665, could perfume really save your life?
Kent College History's insight:

'How do you avoid catching the plague? Smoke constantly. Carry a sponge soaked in vinegar. Hang oranges studded with cloves around your house. This was the best medical advice available circa 1665, as the Great Plague ravaged London. The miasma theory of contagious disease held that sickness spread through unpleasant aromas. A whiff of ‘bad air’ could kill you – and the right fragrance just might save your life.'

Robespierre and the Terror | History Today

Robespierre and the Terror | History Today | Year 8: Tudors; French Revolution; Empire & Slavery | Scoop.it
Kent College History's insight:

'Maximilien Robespierre has always provoked strong feelings. For the English he is the ‘sea-green incorruptible’ portrayed by Carlyle, the repellent figure at the head of the Revolution, who sent thousands of people to their death under the guillotine. The French, for the most part, dislike his memory still more. There is no national monument to him, though many of the revolutionaries have had statues raised to them. Robespierre is still considered beyond the pale; only one rather shabby metro station in a poorer suburb of Paris bears his name.'
