OBJECTIVE Side-to-side (S-S) superficial temporal artery–middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass was reportedly used to treat a special moyamoya disease (MMD) patient with collaterals arising from the donor STA. However, the S-S technique is not routinely performed to date, and its benefits are still unknown for adult MMD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of routine use of the S-S technique for adult MMD. METHODS The authors retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 50 adult patients (65 hemispheres, including 30 in the end-to-side [E-S] group and 35 in the S-S group) with MMD who underwent STA-MCA bypass. The patient demographic characteristics, clinical courses, technical details, intraoperative blood flow data, postoperative and preoperative relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) values, modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores, and short-term revascularization results were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS There were no significant differences observed in terms of the baseline characteristics, bypass patency rates, postoperative/preoperative rCBF values, incidence of cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS), mRS scores, and short-term revascularization results between the 2 groups (all p > 0.05). Intraoperative blood flow analysis showed that the increase of STA flow in the E-S group was significantly higher than that of proximal STA flow in the S-S group (p = 0.008). Although the increases of proximal and distal recipient flow in the E-S group seemed greater than those in the S-S group, the results were not statistically significant (p = 0.086 for proximal flow and p = 0.076 for distal flow). CHS symptoms in the S-S group were milder and with much shorter duration. The follow-up angiographic data of the representative case demonstrated that both frontal and parietal STA branches and the occipital artery participated in postoperative collateralization. CONCLUSIONS S-S anastomosis can achieve comparable clinical effects to standard E-S construction. S-S anastomosis used in adult MMD demonstrated mild CHS symptoms with short duration and had the potential to arouse all scalp arteries as donor sources for revascularization through the intact distal STA branch via flow self-regulation.

Finale de "Ma Thèse en 3 minutes Chrono (MT3C)" à Shanghai.
Le mercredi 26 novembre s’est tenue la finale du prestigieux concours « Ma Thèse en 3 minutes Chrono (MT3C) » organisé par le Consulat de France à Shanghai et l’Université Jiao Tong de Shanghai, en partenariat avec l’Université Paris Cité, en présence des Vice-présidents ZHANG Zhaoguo et Antoine KOUCHNER et du Consul général de France à Shanghai, M. Joan VALADOU.
Monsieur Joan VALADOU a mis en avant, durant son discours, le rôle de l’éducation, de la science et de la recherche dans le partenariat entre la France et la Chine. Il a souligné que MT3C était un événement exceptionnel, qui s’inscrit dans une ambition commune de contribuer à une réponse mondiale aux défis sociétaux. Il s’est réjoui que la troisième édition de cette finale soit organisée à Shanghai au sein de l’université Jiao Tong, une grande université chinoise, très engagée dans des collaborations avec la France, en partenariat avec l’Université Paris Cité, prestigieuse université française.
L’édition 2025 a été marquée par un niveau général très relevé et une compétition très serrée. Ceci est le résultat de l’accompagnement sur mesure des coachs, Cécile DRAI de l’Université Paris Cité et LI Song, également maître de cérémonie. Leur expertise a permis aux candidats de peaufiner leur discours des mois durant, mais également d’affuter leur style et de donner le meilleur d’eux-mêmes sur scène.
Un jury composé de six membres a eu la lourde tâche de départager les 11 finalistes pour sélectionner les 3 grands vainqueurs de cette troisième édition de MT3C.
Le prix d’éloquence a été attribué à Mme CHEN Xuejing, pour sa capacité exceptionnelle à captiver l’audience, son talent oratoire et la force de son message.
Le prix de Vulgarisation scientifique a été décerné à M. TIAN Xishui, pour sa capacité à rendre son travail de recherche accessible et captivant. Grâce à ses explications claires et son enthousiasme communicatif, il a su faire vivre la science auprès de l’auditoire.
Le lauréat du prix Franco-Chinois est M. SONG Yuliang, pour sa contribution au développement et à la mise en valeur des liens entre la France et la Chine. Par son engagement et son esprit de collaboration, il incarne parfaitement la coopération et l’amitié entre nos deux pays.
En parallèle de nos 300 auditeurs sur place, dont une centaine du lycée français de Shanghai, 10 000 spectateurs en ligne ont pu élire leur candidat favori. Suite à un vote serré, le prix du public est revenu à Mme CHEN Xuejing. Félicitations à notre lauréate, qui en plus d’avoir séduit le jury, a conquis le public.
