"THE MODERN WEB contains no shortage of horrors, from ubiquitous ad trackers to all-consuming platforms to YouTube comments, generally. Unfortunately, there's no panacea for what ails this internet we've built. But anyone weary of black-box algorithms controlling what you see online at least has a respite, one that's been there all along but has often gone ignored. Tired of Twitter? Facebook fatigued? It's time to head back to RSS.
Jim Lerman's insight:
I like RSS a great deal and get a lot of information through my RSS readers. RSS enables me to be my own curator rather than rely on someone else's algorithm.
I subscribe to both of the most widely used RSS readers, The Old Reader and Feedly, although that's pretty redundant. I should give one up, but never can decide which one to turn off.
At any rate, if you're looking for reliable sources of written material that you can customize, RSS can't be beat.
Below, I've compiled some writing prompts that will get the juices in your brain flowing, and inspire your next piece of writing, no matter what genre you write. Feel free to go wild with these, and see where your imagination takes you:
Just like students can be taught to examine the convergence of color in a painting or the pairing of a violin and cello in a crescendo, they can also be taught to recognize the cultivation of sentence structure, the magic of precise language, and the intricate balance of information and narrative. They can read expository writing that enchants them while critically examining how the working cogs of an essay propel it forward.
Programs that allow you to connect to someone else’s computer to provide technical support are readily available — TeamViewer, Zoho Assist or even Microsoft’s Windows Remote Desktop utility are some of the options. For simple online aid, however, you may not need to download extra software on either computer.

To improve content marketing, use Google Analytics to understand on-site search queries, check what is working on mobile, optimize site speed, understand your customers with affinity reports, focus on searcher intent, visualize your funnel, focus on current traffic sources, review high traffic, low engagement pages, know when to publish content, track & measure ROI.

"From Wyoming Public Media comes HumaNature, a podcast sharing "real stories where humans and our habitat meet." Through these audio episodes, and the occasional video, listeners can experience true tales of encounters between people and the natural world that are alternately funny, moving, and thrilling. Recent episodes include "Remembering How To Be Human," in which artist Stephanie Housley moves from New York City to tiny Bondurant, Wyoming (population 93), and "Out of the Frying Pan," in which a couple from Portland, Oregon takes a weekend camping trip to the mountains to escape the city's heat only to get trapped by a wildfire.
Widely acclaimed for its storytelling, HumaNature was the 2016 and 2018 recipient of the Best Podcast award from Public Radio News Directors Incorporated, and it has aired on more than twenty public radio stations. Episodes run approximately fifteen to twenty minutes long, and most are accompanied by several photographs. Listeners can subscribe via multiple platforms, including SoundCloud, Google Play, and Apple Podcasts."

Sometimes there is no way to write something unique on a hackneyed topic, but there is always a way to write something better than all existing content on the topic. Humans are social animals because our survival depends on it. Here are four strategies for teaching students how their brains work through acts of collaboration.
the most important skill for a teacher is his or her ability to build trust with a student, which develops when students can sense that the educator is willing to hear their ideas, thoughts, and musings despite their challenges with grammar, low grades, or test scores in previous classes. This doesn’t mean that teachers need to cushion their feedback with fake praise, but it does mean, she thinks, that schools should help teachers develop skills to recognize what all students, including those who might be considered “low achieving,” do in their classrooms—instead of focusing mostly on what they don’t do or know.
Producing your own podcast can be a fairly inexpensive process, once you get set up with the necessary recording equipment and distribution method. The basic steps are: Record the show, edit the show, and post the show online. The first thing you should do, however, is come up with a plan for what you want your podcast to cover, how often you plan to release new episodes and how you want to record it. Via Jim Lerman
