Join us for this panel event, discussing some of the key policy issues pertaining to women and work: from sexual harassment in the workplace, to the “motherhood penalty”, to the way women in employment (and women “who quit”) are represented in the media and policy discourse.
The event launches the publication of the new LSE Public Policy Review issue “Multidisciplinary approaches and policy innovation in Gender Research”, edited by Almudena Sevilla. Find out more about the issue that explores more emerging challenges and the evolving landscape of gender research, including perspectives from law, communications, health and social policy, gender studies and economics.

There is a conceptual overlap between voluntary work and unpaid care work, as some voluntary work provides care work outside of the household. Many other volunteering activities do not count as care work, and unpaid care work for one’s own household is not classified as volunteering.Time spent doing voluntary and unpaid care work relates to one another, often in distinctly gendered ways. Both voluntary work outside the household and unpaid care work within the household provide valuable contributions to individuals and communities, helping to maintain the preconditions of social and economic life.In this report, a case study of Bangladesh addresses the relative lack of evidence on volunteering in lower-income countries, employing labour force survey (LFS) and time-use survey (TUS) data to explore volunteer work and unpaid care work. There are gendered patterns to the distribution of care work and volunteer work. Globally, care work both in the home and outside of the home is predominantly undertaken by women. Volunteering comprises a diverse range of activities and there are gendered patterns regarding who performs which type of role. Volunteer roles involving care tend to be done by women; the analysis presented in this study estimates that in Bangladesh, female volunteers spend 80.4 per cent of their volunteering time on care work activities compared to 40.6 per cent of male volunteers’ time. This gendered pattern may stem, at least in part, from the ways in which specific programmes mobilize volunteer labour. The report offers a set of recommendations for key actors to address inequalities related to gendered patterns of unpaid care and volunteering. For example, attention should be paid to the conditions in which unpaid care work provided by volunteers takes place. This will help to ensure adequate resources, fair recognition and appropriate support. Further, the gendered distribution of voluntary care work translates into differential labour market and income opportunities for women and men. This can be addressed by policies that promote skills recognition, appreciate the value of this work in its diverse forms, and ensure equitable access to volunteer opportunities.

Northumbria Archives. Writing with our project partners Welsh Women’s Aid, we will be examining the 1894 divorce petition of Lucy Gregory, the wife of a clergyman from Hampstead, who experienced multiple forms of abuse during her four-year marriage. Her story highlights that domestic abuse is an age-old problem, that it can happen to anyone, that it happens in public and in private, and that it occurs all year round. The framework that Lucy was forced to operate within did not provide her with the vocabulary to describe the abuse she faced at the hand of her husband as anything other than ‘cruelty’, but, as we will explain, that does not mean she did not experience what we would today recognise as physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, and coercive control. As with so many living in abusive relationships today, the festive period was particularly difficult for Lucy, but it was far from unusual
The Wikipedia editors' community has been actively pursuing the intent of achieving gender equality. To that end, it is important to explore the historical evolution of underlying gender disparities in Wikipedia articles. This paper presents the Wikipedia Gender Dashboard (WGD), a tool designed to enable the interaction with gender distribution data, including the average age in every subclass of individuals (i.e. Astronauts, Politicians, etc.) over the years. Wikipedia APIs, DBpedia, and Wikidata endpoints were used to query the data to ensure persistent data collection. The WGD was then created with Microsoft Power BI before being embedded on a public website. The analysis of the data available in the WGD found that female articles only represent around 17% of English Wikipedia, but it has been growing steadily over the last 20 years. Meanwhile, the average age across genders decreased over time. WGD also shows that most subclasses of `Person' are male-dominated. Wikipedia editors can make use of WGD to locate areas with marginalized genders in Wikipedia, and increase their efforts to produce more content providing coverage for those genders to achieve better gender equality in Wikipedia.

Participant Ethnographic Research in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro: Exploring Women’s Empowerment through Playing Football
Speaker Emma Frazer (University of Bristol and Cardiff University, UK)
Across Latin America, women’s football has repeatedly been discouraged, restricted and even prohibited at state level, with the explicit aim of preventing women from playing, while the men’s game was encouraged and became representative of the national identity. The inequalities are still very present; women have to overcome gendered expectations to play, face stigma, and receive far less structural support. So, why do women choose to play football? What impact does football have on their lives? How does playing empower them off the pitch?
For my research, I spent nine months conducting participant ethnographic field work in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro to explore these questions in the heart of two footballing nations. I played football with thirteen different women’s teams, conducted two dozen interviews and had more than 200 players complete my questionnaire, using the methodological framework of Grounded Theory to code my data and generate theory. Through being able to speak Spanish and Portuguese, and, crucially, by playing football with the women, I was able to achieve a special level of access and familiarity with players. In turn, I hope to communicate their experiences to a wider audience in a way that rings true to the players.
