The City as Living Laboratory (CaLL) is a framework to make sustainability tangible through the arts. Its goal is to bring artists’ innovative thinking to the table to imagine the city of the future, adding on-the-ground experiential impact to research and policy.
We propose a CaLL District in the neighborhood around The Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park. Borrowing on a historic name for the Long Island City area, the District could be called “RAVENSWOOD/CaLL.”
This initiative would establish the area surrounding these two institutions as a district of innovation that supports collaborative projects among artists, scientists, and other experts, addressing issues of social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
It also recognizes the ad hoc, heterogeneous nature of the area: its often hidden ecology; its history of manufacturing; and the presence of small-scale artisanal fabrication and artists.
