Diversity & Inclusion in Business
We don't have to be the same. To the contrary, better business results and innovations are achieved by diverse, not homogeneous teams. Plus, it is fair to give the same opportunities to all.

INTERNATIONAL CRIME - The world’s largest international police organisation Interpol made history on Thursday when it elected top French police chief Mireille Ballestrazzi as its first female president.

A top French police officer has been elected the first woman to lead the world’s largest international police organisation Interpol at its general assembly in Rome on Thursday.

Mireille Ballestrazzi, 58, well-known for her work combating organised crime in Bordeaux and Corsica, is currently second in command of France’s police force.

Interpol, based in the French city of Lyon, announced the historic appointment on Twitter.

Significant moment for women

Speaking about her appointment to French media Ballestrazzi said it was a significant moment for France and particularly for women.

“Of course I am happy they have put their trust in me,” Ballestrazzi told French radio RTL after her appointment was made public. “I am proud for women because this can have an impact and I am proud for France,” she added.

Research Summary: Women and Risk – What if Women Ran Wall Street? | Diversity & Inclusion in Business | Scoop.it
Despite the common story that women can't control their emotions, studies that look at women and risk and biology show that men sometimes have more trouble with it than men do.
Kasia Hein-Peters's insight:

Both men and women can be emotional sometimes, for similar of different reasons. Statistics are interesting, yet each of us has to deal with our emotional and rational self on his/her own. This article is great because it helps to remove the stereotype of an "emotional woman" versus a "rational man".

Obama Appoints First Woman Director of the Secret Service

Obama Appoints First Woman Director of the Secret Service | Diversity & Inclusion in Business | Scoop.it

Via Marion Chapsal
Marion Chapsal's curator insight, March 28, 2013 3:21 AM

Bravo! Extract: "The cinematic image of a Secret Service agent is a cheerless man of stocky build with thick sunglasses, whispering brusquely into his sleeve. He’s part of a traditionally imagined boy’s club, a masculine space where women are invisible. But in a historic move that may help disrupt the macho image and ethos that surrounds the agency, President Obama hasappointed Julia Peirson to be the first woman director of the Secret Service."

Why a woman?

Administration officials said Peirson was appointed in the hopes she can help reform the male-centered culture of the Secret Service and restore its credibility after the embarrassing Colombian prostitution debacle of April 2012, in which 13 Secret Service agents (all men, of course) were caught bringing prostitutes back to their hotel room during the President’s trip to Cartagena. Eight of the agents lost their jobs, and the scandal overshadowed the diplomatic aims of the trip. On top of protecting President Obama, Peirson will be responsible for rebuilding trust in the marred agency.

Cheers to another glass ceiling being shattered and another boys’ club forced to admit “girls.”
