Technical cooperation staff with more than five years of continuous service are encouraged to apply and will be given special consideration at the screening and evaluation stage.
Within the context of the ILO's efforts to promote staff mobility, applicants should expect to take up different assignments (field and Headquarters) during their career. The desirable length of the assignment in this specific position is three to five years, following which period the incumbent should be willing to move to another assignment and/or duty station.

INTRODUCTION The position is located in the English unit of the Official Documentation Branch (OFFDOC) in the Relations, Meetings and Document Services Department (RELCONF). OFFDOC is responsible for the editing, translation and revision of all official ILO documents, including those submitted to the International Labour Conference, the Governing Body, Regional Meetings and Sectoral Meetings as well as documents produced by the Office of the Director-General. The position is head of the English unit, which is responsible for translating these documents into English from the other working languages and for editing documents written in English. The position reports to the Chief of OFFDOC. Description of Duties
Specific duties
1. Assess the Branch work plan in order to determine the future work load and the staff resources needed by the English unit to carry out its tasks. Submit proposals for short-term recruitment to the Chief of Branch for approval. Contract out work to external collaborators to complement the resources of the unit within the available budgetary resources.
2. Work closely with author units in the planning and preparation of official documents. Provide authoritative advice with respect to the provision of services and the establishment of requirements. Organize training and briefing for author units.
3. Lead and coordinate the work of the team so as to foster harmonious working relations and effective cooperation with other departments.
4. Plan and organize the work of a team of editors, revisers and translators during major ILO meetings.
5. As appropriate, participate on behalf of the English unit in working groups or committees set up at the branch, department or Office level to draw up or update the rules, house style and standards for ILO publications and official documents.
6. Actively prospect for and identify suitable candidates to replenish the roster of English free lance-translators, revisers and editors. Approve the entry of these translators, revisers and editors in the ILO database of external collaborators.
7. Liaise and organize exchanges with the language services of other international organizations .
8. Organize internships for junior translators.
9. Establish and maintain contact with major translation schools in order to identify potential candidates and keep these institutions abreast of the ILO's requirements.
10. Promote the development and use of appropriate CATT tools.
11. Replace Branch Chief, as required.
These specific duties should be carried out in conjunction with the following generic duties adapted to the work programme in question.
Generic duties
1. Plan, organize, supervise and monitor the translation and revision work, as well as related terminology and reference work, of a unit providing these services in a single language for the organization. Allocate work to staff, assign staff to particular translation or revision duties, determine and communicate priorities, and control the quality and quantity of output and compliance with established rules, house style and standards.
2. Supervise and evaluate the work performed by the staff of the unit (including short-term staff) and by external collaborators. Provide new staff with guidance and training. Organize the testing of candidates for employment, including prospective contractual translators, and make recommendations regarding the selection of staff.
3. Revise translations of highly sensitive texts and approve finished translations of exceptionally difficult or complex character in the target language. Translate texts that cannot be assigned to other staff due to urgency, confidentiality or importance.
4. Formulate instructions and guidelines governing the work of the unit.
5. Make authoritative linguistic determinations in the target language, and direct the conduct of terminological research within the unit.
6. Recommend action on personnel, budgetary and procedural matters relating to the efficient operations of the unit. Required Qualifications Education Advanced university degree in languages or first level university degree with two years experience (in addition to the ten years minimum experience required below) and sustained experience in the translation field. Experience At least ten years of professional translation and revision experience, including at least five years at the international level in a senior level position. Experience in the organization of translation and revision work in in-session meetings and conferences. Languages Excellent command of English and a good knowledge of French and Spanish. Knowledge of one or more of the other ILO working languages (Russian, German, Chinese, Arabic) is considered advantageous. Good knowledge of the wide range of subject areas and knowledge of administrative policies and practices of the organization. Ability to make authoritative judgements on linguistic matters and to perform efficiently as managers. Advanced translation and revision skills, and thorough knowledge of specialised concepts and terminology. Extensive knowledge of work practices, methods and processes in the language field. Familiarity with the organization's policies, programmes and procedures. Ability to provide leadership and to motivate and train staff. Judgement, initiative and analytical skills to assume managerial, administrative and supervisory responsibilities. Knowledge of and experience utilising computers including word processing and database software, and ability to use computer based terminological and information tools. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

The ability to work in a multicultural environment and gender-sensitive behaviour and attitudes are also required. Additional Information: Evaluation (which may include one or several written tests) and interviews for this post will take place in principle between the last week of March and the end of May 2012. The paper said that the five personnel involved had not intentionally desecrated the holy book and only a series of lapses had led to the incident. An American interpreter would also face disciplinary action.

The Quran incident started almost two weeks ago, when the books and other Islamic texts that U.S. military officials said had extremist inscriptions were removed from the library at the Parwan Detention Facility and then taken to the burn pit at the adjoining Bagram Air Field. A NATO military official said last week that it appeared detainees were exchanging messages by making notations in the texts. The Western official confirmed reports that after the writings were discovered, two Afghan-American interpreters were assigned to go through the materials at the library and that 1,652 items were removed. The items, which included the Qurans, were placed in boxes and the Western official confirmed that a decision was taken to dispose of them because of a lack of storage space and because of the notes scribbled in them. At some point a group of soldiers on a work detail came and removed the books to throw them away. The Western official told The Associated Press on Saturday the three soldiers on the garbage detail had no idea what they were carrying to the burn pit.

When I found out The Arden Theatre Company was going to be doing “Cyrano” as part of their 2011/2012 season, I may have actually squealed a little. You see, “Cyrano de Bergerac” is my all time favorite play. Not one of my favorite plays mind you. My favorite of all time. Perhaps this is why I initially got a bit nervous when I saw press releases stating that the Arden’s production would be featuring a brand new translation of the play. For those who may not be aware, “Cyrano” is a classic French piece that involves a great deal of word play. Study claims that texting can negatively impact vocabulary... Fears about the impact SMS-speak - crunched language with abbreviations and shortened words - is having on our language skills are not new. This particular study at the University of Calgary is only the latest in a line of them purporting to show causal links between people employing such language - created because of the inconvenience of typing long messages on a phone keyboard, character limits etc - and their ability to use or learn more conventional language. But there are two problems with such studies. The first is that there are just as many studies showing that texting could actually improve children's language skills. And the other is the false assumption that any change in the way we use language is to be bemoaned.
