PATRICE EVRA has been informed that he may have difficulty proving he was the victim of racial abuse from Luis Suarez, because of a counter-argument that certain variations of the N-word are not deemed offensive where the Liverpool player grew up,... Suarez has categorically denied racially abusing the Senegal-born France player and the FA’s investigators are having to consider the different context with which words that would be considered offensive in England are commonly used in Uruguay and other Spanish-speaking countries. “Negrito”, for example, could have shocking connotations for someone without full knowledge of the nuances of the language. But the counter-argument is that this is one of several derivations that are used in many countries, with no derogatory meaning – often in the same way someone could be called “pal” or “mate”.

The Selection Committee would ... like to request The Hindu to have, from next year onwards at least, separate awards of equal value for fiction written in English and that translated from the languages of India so that both receive equal attention and the process of selection is made a little easier since it is not often easy for a translation to compete with original English writing in terms of the fluency of style as the translation is obliged to retain certain modes and echoes of the original language and the specificities of the culture concerned. The award for the translated work will however not be a translation award, but one for translated fiction. We also recommend that the calendar year be the basis for nominations and not an arbitrarily chosen duration as it becomes difficult to authenticate the month of publication.
What should we think of this sharia affair? Could it be that we have supported the insurgents of Benghazi, only to discover, when it’s all over, a State that forbids divorce and re-establishes polygamy? Details. Explanations. 1. It all began with one phrase. A single phrase. Of course, this phrase didn’t come from just anyone, since it was uttered by Mustafa Abdeljalil, the President of the National Transitional Council and father of the victory. But, president or not, Abdeljalil is a member of a Council whose decisions are collegial. And this Council is, as its name indicates, an organ of transition whose purpose is not to decree the laws of the future Libya.
