The MOOC (massive online open course) has suddenly become one of the hottest trends in the training world. We’ve already talked about what MOOCs are and how they work. In this post, we’re going to look at some of the pros and cons of this approach compared to more traditional classroom training.

We are learning more and more about who enrolls in Massive Open Online Classes (MOOCs) and how those students behave. For example, Harvard and MIT recently released de-identified data from their first 16 MOOCs that ran in 2012-2013 (read more about the Harvard and MIT data setshere and access the actual data here). The data set includes several variables relating to student activities – for example, whether students visited the course website, watched videos, or completed exams. These types of measures can tell us a lot about what students do, but it is not clear how much they learned as a result of those actions.

Curation - is it the new search tool (Valenza 2011), the new search (Good 2012), the future of Web 2.0 (Boyd 2010), or the new black (O'Connell 2012)? What is curation anyway, and how can it be used as a tool for student and teacher learning? This essay will investigate what curation is and the different contexts it is used in. Why is it important; who are the curators, what motivates them and what makes a great curator? What processes and tools are used for curation and what digital literacies are required for successful curation? It will conclude with an investigation into ways teachers can use curation both with and for their students and as a tool for their own professional learning and a brief look at some curation tools.

Americans love the Finnish education system. But they're puzzled by it. It tops them in international rankings and they just can't figure out why a tiny Nordic country is more awesome than they are.

The flipped classroom model (sometimes called the inverted classroom) is one in which traditional in-class activity–the lecture—is delivered outside of class via video-taped lectures and other web-based materials. In-class time is used for collaborative project work, small group problem-solving, and other such activities that allow students to engage at a deep level with the content they viewed outside of (and before) class. This model provides faculty with more time in-class to work with individual students and allows students to master the lecture content at their own pace.

Yes, the Flipped Classroom (Video lessons watched before class time) is a fashionable topic but whilst there’s still chalk-and-talk together with standardised testing I feel I must continue to push it. And no, it’s not just chalk-and-talk in disguise. It creates a whole new learning environment for the student.

- Teachers who teach online classes, in particular, see a strong correlation between the use of technology and students’ college and career ready skill development. More than half of these teachers say technology use helps students understand how to apply academic concepts to real world problems (58 percent), take ownership of their learning (57 percent) and develop problem solving and critical thinking skills (57 percent).

“Just because we have the best hammer does not mean that every problem is a nail.” (Barack Obama) Earlier this week, Barack Obama addressed the first class to graduate from West Point since 9/11 that will probably not be sent into combat in Iraq or Afghanistan. These words from his speech bring Abraham Maslow’s famous hammer-and-nail quote into the 21st century geopolitical context and, in doing so, remind us all that just because you can do something, it doesn’t mean you should.
