Rice is susceptible to the accumulation of arsenic, which is mobile in flooded soils. Arsenic is toxic to plants as well as humans. The research project “Reducing Inorganic Arsenic Levels in Rice by Appropriate Water Management,” which addresses this issue, was selected for funding by the Center for a Sustainable Future to receive funding from the 2014 Academic Venture Fund.

The Humanitarian Centre hosted a seminar on Sustainable Agriculture Development, led by the TAA (Tropical Agriculture Association), as part of the Global Food Futures Year. 

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf noted that the introduction SRI is one of the many methods the Ministry of Agriculture has employed to increase rice production and CHAP has been the institution that has been using this method very successfully.

An additional advantage was reduction in cultivation cost. It is also observed that the cost of cultivation is reduced by about Rs.4,000-5,000 per acre in this method due to skipping of practices like nursery raising and manual transplanting. Duration of the crop is also reduced by 7-10 days in modified SRI method compared to conventional practice.

Commercial rice farmers in Nsanje have commended government for introducing the Systems of Rice Intensification (SRI) concept. They say the new system has enabled them to double their annual produce.
