Calvince Okello, a young Kenyan social entrepreneur, decided to ensure proper, reliable and real-time information flow among smallholder farmers, traders and other service providers along the agricultural value chain in all parts of the country, by leveraging the use of mobile services... He created M-shamba, which in Swahili means mobile farm... Thus far, the business has reached 6,000 rice farmers and helped them adopt System Rice Intensification (SRI).
Farm System, one of M-shamba’s key products, is able to guide the farmer in the necessary activities throughout the crop life cycle, from planting to postharvest handling, as well as keeping track of all their revenue, expenditure, and tasks. When the farm produce is ready for sale, the farmer is able to upload the commodity information to Marketplace, another M-shamba product.
To achieve the target, the ministry will use the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), a plan in which farmers will increase productivity, quality and economic effectiveness, while reducing pesticides and nitrogenous fertilisers.
Mai Van Trinh, director of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's Institute for Agricultural Environment emphasizes SRI among new water- and cost-efficient farming techniques that will allow Viet Nam to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in wet rice production by 15 to 20 per cent by 2020.
SRI methods have been raising paddy yields for farmers in Burundi from 1.5 t/ha on average to between 3 and 5 t/ha, depending on how many of the SRI practices are used, and how well they are used. Gilbert Bizimungu provided SRI extension material recently published by the Ministere de l'Agriculture et de l'Elevage: http://sri.cals.cornell.edu/countries/burundi/extmats/Burundi_Fiche_Technique_SRI_Minagrie_Fr2015.pdf
This update also links to a video produced in 2012 for IFAD and SRI-Rice by Flooded Cellar Productions that tells the story of SRI introduction, spread, methods and impact in Burundi and nearby countries.

Under SRI cultivation, roots were significantly longer and their biomass was significantly heavier than for conventional management. More root hairs and healthier root hairs were observed on rice plants under SRI cultivation compared to conventional practice. Also, the numbers of aerenchyma (air pockets) in plant roots were seen to be less under SRI cultivation compared to conventionally-grown rice plants, while at the same time, the numbers of aerenchyma in plant stems were the same with both cultivation methods.
The report from the Workshop on Building Alliances Around the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and Agroecology is now finished! The event was held October 27-28, 2014, at the Maple Hotel, Bangna, Bangkok, Thailand. Co-organized by Oxfam and SRI-Rice at Cornell University, the workshop had 51 participants from 16 countries. A longer version of the report is available by request.
Among other positive effects, SRI methods increased profitability and reduced disease incidence (e.g. yellow mottle virus) in this study in Morogoro, Tanzania, conducted by by researchers at Sokoine University, Chollima Agricultural Research Institute, and the Zonal Irrigation Unit-Morogoro.
The report is now available for the Benin West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP) first SRI training held by host organization PROCAD on Nov. 12-14, 2014. The initiative is designed to mainstream SRI in the important Ouémé River Valley in the southern part of the country.
Over the course of the next few years future trainings of trainers and relay trainings will extend SRI to an estimated 5,000 farmers in the southern Benin. (For more information, check the SRI-WAAPP website)
"I asked, what was so special about SRI? Doesn’t it require a lot of labour and seed as a result of which the cost of cultivation goes up? No, he replied. It’s a wrong impression being created. Raghupati told me that SRI has resulted in 1/3rd saving of water and simultaneously an increase of 50 per cent in crop productivity. The seed requirement has come down from 30 kg/acre to 5kg/acre, and there is no additional labour required. Against an application of about 75 kg of urea per acre he has completely stopped its use while he has been able to scale down the usage of DAP fertiliser from 3 bags to one bag now."
Raghupati, a new age Tamil Nadu farmer, is interviewed here about the farmers’ club he chairs — Sirunagar Farmers’ Club — which was awarded for best performance by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)
