Designing biological systems: Systems engineering meets Synthetic Biology

Synthetic Biology offers qualitatively new perspectives on the benefits of industrially harnessed biological processes. The ability to modify and reprogramme natural biology increases the scope of tailored bioprocesses and yields attractive prospects beyond conventional Biotechnology. The present review summarises the major achievements and categorises them according to a hierarchy of system levels. Similar structures are known in the engineering sciences and might prove useful for the future development of Synthetic Biology.

Multiplexed genome engineering and genotypin... [Methods Enzymol. 2011] - PubMed - NCBI

Engineering at the scale of whole genomes requires fundamentally new molecular biology tools. Recent advances in recombineering using synthetic oligonucleotides enable the rapid generation of mutants at high efficiency and specificity and can be implemented at the genome scale. With these techniques, libraries of mutants can be generated, from which individuals with functionally useful phenotypes can be isolated. Furthermore, populations of cells can be evolved in situ by directed evolution using complex pools of oligonucleotides. Here, we discuss ways to utilize these multiplexed genome engineering methods, with special emphasis on experimental design and implementation.

BioTechniques - Venter’s New Hope: Synthetic Algae for Biofuels

BioTechniques - Venter’s New Hope: Synthetic Algae for Biofuels | SynBioFromLeukipposInstitute | Scoop.it
Craig Venter changes his tune on biofuel source, shifting his focus from natural algae oil to synthetic biology.

Is this really a business?

Biofuel as an Synthetic Biology Application had been a hot topic for a while. However, I am wondering, if this is really as promising as it looks at the moment. Can this ever be a cost effective business?
In my opinion we still need to find out where the really great applications for Synthetic Biology are. What is the real demand from society. We have an amazing technology on the horizon. We need to find out what we should use it for. Any suggestions for the next "killer app"? The next macintosh?....
